It has been (or it was at some point) implemented in the game programming logic but you can't use it because of lack of animations and / or specific keybinding (as well as I remember, again I may be wrong, there is an old post about that somewhere here in the forum)! :)
Progressive leaning, speed and stances would help for the tactical feeling and better body awareness (not that the game is the worst FPS in that field but there is room for improvment nonetheless). :)
A suggestion reading the FAQ:
"What do you use the unique weapon positions for?
Movement speed: High Ready and Low Ready allow for slightly faster movement when compared to Ready and Engaged (Aiming Down Sights)."
Perthaps it would be worth experimenting a slightly stronger effect of Ready and Engaged positions on movement speed as I feel that now the effect is barrely noticable. I'm not sure what the effect of leaning positions has on speed movement (leaning when running seems to get you at walking speed movement but I may be wrong) but if Ready position decrease a bit more noticabily the walking (and running) speed and Engaged position reduced it more (enought that it's a noticable decrease of speed compared to Ready position as it is the case when running) we would end with three different walking speeds with always the opportunity to have a more quick walking speed when on Ready or Engaged position by holding Shift key (the player is not forced to walk at a turtle speed when on Ready or Engaged position). It could give a better "tactical" control on movements speed and walking sounds (walking at "full speed" on Low or High Ready position could be just a bit more noisy) and weapon position would less feel like a "gimmick" (I don't think it is one but it could definitively has more "obvious" effect on gameplay). :)
Star Citizens has introduced an excellent solution for a quick & seamless change. A gamepad normally uses the analog stick for that, so they implemented the scrollwheel speed switch: Scrolling forward, speed up forward movement, scroll backward, slowing the speed down. It is the perfect solution for mouse&KB, IMO.
Beside mouse wheel, i’d go with :
forward to walk (speed = 100)
double tap forward to walk faster (125)
shift + forward to run (200)
shift + double tap forward to sprint (300% cannot shot at all)
Ctrl + forward to crounch walk slowly (25)
Ctrl + double tap forward to crounch walk (75)
Alt (prone) to prone slow (5)
Alt + double tap to prone faster (15, cannot shot)
For "crouch / prone" and body height I would go for something like:
* hold C (or whatever key you choose) + mouse wheel to modify the height of your body and get to crouch and prone position "slowly" (without much noise)
* tap C to switch quickly (more noise) between crouch and stand
* double tap C to quickly (more noise) go prone (tap C to go crouch or double tap C to stand)
