How does elo gain in Masters work?

I've noticed that even when I place 2nd or sometimes 1st I lose rank. I know it is also due to other players gaining elo in the meantime but it's confusing to see one lose rank after winning or getting to 2nd place.

I'm also not sure I like the master system now. If you can't manage to play a lot of games, you can get surpassed by the time you log in again.

From what I've noticed, it seems to be a static gain/loss of points as follows:

1st Place: +6
2nd Place: +2
3rd Place: -2
4th Place: -6

It doesn't take into consideration the relative ratings of the players, etc. So it isn't elo in the traditional sense.
