Rise of Ix Required for All Players or Just Host?

I just purchased the Rise of Ix DLC and was wondering if all players in an online game have to have this DLC to use it, or just the host?

I don't have the expansion but my friend does, and we were able to play Ix together if he's the host. I was even able to get some Ix-exclusive achievements.

I just got the base game in the new Humble bundle. Is it worth playing the game from the start with the expansion or will it be too complicated?

Start with the base game. The game plays very differently when you turn Ix on, and it does increase the complexity. My friends and I like to sometimes play the base game and at other times Ix, sometimes also adding in epic mode - the experience varies.
