You aren't wrong, it is like reading a comic, because well, yes, simply it is a story-driven, visual novel game after all to begin with (excluding the RPG/fighting aspects), the story is what builds up the game and the characters in it. Like what some have said, if you don't like story games or games with too much dialogue, it's basically a no for you in this case, which is why you found it boring. Probably should've done some research before purchasing at the very least to see if it fits up to your expectations, but what's done is done, I still suggest that you should try to play a little more since you're only 3 hours in, but up to you!
Sorry for the explanations, but last but not least, open world. Is it open world? Yes, but also no. If we were to compare Yakuza or FF series and Persona, they do not operate open worlds the same. The most open worldy thing you will get from Persona is traversing through Mementos, Palaces, Parts of Japan-- but they serve a purpose of things like upgrading gear, leveling up social stats, confidants, purchasing items, and so forth, but do keep in mind, time passes by when you do some of these specific things (which I explained in the beginning).
Anyhow, I apologize for the long response, but if you did take the time to read it then I appreciate that xD. Once again, it is your opinion and decision after all, but as a Persona gamer, I do suggest you giving it a try again, otherwise, sorry to hear that it wasn't your cup of tea.
No need to apologize for a lengthy reply! I'll definitely play more, but I didn't realize it was a cross between graphic novel and game. I like story driven games, such as The Witcher 3. But this is my first Persona game ever. I was surprised at how linear it starts out, but hopefully I'll get more immersed as time goes along. Not a bad game, for sure, but a bit too railroady and narrative-driven so far.
The difference is in that most JRPGs you can just ignore what is being said, but not in Persona. :V
I am seriously glad I did because yes there will still be long ass dialog scenes but the game does open up and once you understand the full mechanics behind almost everything from the social to the dungeon crawling it becomes a blast to play.
It's now one of my favourite games ever. I would suggest sticking with it. At least until you get to second dungeon (because that is kind of where it sunk its hooks into me).
I'm finding myself frustrated by the constant dialogue and frustration of Morgana deciding what my character can or can't do, just beat a major boss. and then some story plots happened and it's like, wow I've stood around all day inside, bet I can go outside now to get more reputation with someone..
"Morgana: Oh wow i'm tired, we should rest."
- yeah so tiring.. and it feels like it's every day, reading massive automatic dramafests and internal character breaking.
"We all need to agree on a target!"
- well I never agreed to the last target I took down, I actively tried to say no.
- and yes, the days where you get "skip multiple days in a row" and huge dialogue dumps in each day which take 10-15 minutes, leading to an hour or so of dialogue before you can save..? like, let me just start each day individually, please, let the characters meet up and then when I talk to them the dialogue.
Other than wishing Morgana wasn't in the game and caring absolutely nothing for the character because of how annoying he is, and that I could save more often even on "Dud" days, I'm really enjoying P5R even with the fact it seems a "comic book" as OP put it.
but I definitely wouldn't want a repeat of this style on P6.
It's a long game 100-150 hours. It's a game about socialising and sometimes fighting. The choices come in who you talk to basically. There are linear good/bad/best endings basically.
It's a persona game. I'm part way through the second castle and I still feel mostly railroaded by the game. I'm fighting that a little bit constricting but know I'm here for a long haul.
I really hope you get the bad ending.
It manages well the passing, except the beginning and some heavy story moments.
But yeah, the beginning drags a lot but in a good way because we are talking about a game of 130 hours more or less. They want to build the mystery around Persona.
