How does affinity reading work?

Can I stack up points with more than one confidant or do they reset if I get a reading for a different confidant? For example, if I get 3 readings for Maruki and then a reading for Sojiro, will I lose the points Maruki or will it remain boosted indefinitely until I spend time with him?

You can stack them but you can only do one a day, I think. They just add 1 affinity point (or 2 if you have the corresponding persona).
The fortune teller will also tell you if you can get closer after the reading. If you can't she has a different line.

What about carry over? If I'm already ready to rank up someone's link and still get a reading for that confidant, will the extra points carry over to the next time I spend time with them?

Points never carry over to the next rank, regardless of how they're gained.

They carry over to the next rank if they're earned during the rank-up event.

For example, if you go to see Ann who's about to get rank 5, the points you earn during the conversation count towards rank 6.

Knew about that part but a 5000 yen reading not carrying over is a waste.
