Chip Merging sucks

When I combine a dead end that goes left, a dead end that goes up, and a dead end that goes right it should give me a t shape with a bottom power-line missing but instead chip merging is completely random and basically a pointless mechanic.
Why?

Thanks for the reply, I've only merged like 3 chips so I didn't know 100% if chip merging just didn't work, I will avoid it in the future.

The Chip Merging works familiar to Shadow Warrior 2's Gem forge. You just keep putting low level gems/chips into merging, and hoping high level gems/chips comes out.

Than play with gamepad. That adds a challenge to it on harder or above. Or dont use any skill points or chips. Or try to play with feet only. Or while wearing a real Robo Cop suit. Maybe everything combined can give a challenge?

Chip merging is completely random shapes with a chance for a better chip than the ones you put in. It's not worth it until endgame when you have enough chips to burn and when you have Engineering maxed. Basically save ALL your chips until the final level.

I never bothered. The highest default chip I received was 26.

The random chip generator is to mimic the addictive nature of slot machines and make the player think he's having fun, eh.

Fun fact, by using a console on the last level, spawning 500 chips and merging all of them, I came to the conclusion that the maximum % you can get per chip is 38%. This was on Extreme, not sure if difficulty affects it.

It's pretty random and I think it's basically just a gamble. But you definitely get better results if you put points into your engineering skill. Occasionaly, I've got what I needed from merging. But only occasionally.

Be sure to delete the Spectator mod portions, else it bugs out.
Chip command is "chip".
Just in case, I won't help with mod installation, please ask that on the nexus page.

Edit: NG+ patch buffed it, getting 45% now.
