It is true from your point of view but its actually good thing for gamers as a whole, games as form of art should try different things, not only always safe options and good choices.
I think they made a great decision with the character, someone who stands out from your regular main characters, mixing fantasy with NYC spot on.
I believe the devs want her to grow as a person, from obnoxious young woman to...something stunning and brave.
