How is it possible to make a character so unlikable?
Seriously, this character is just the video game equivalent of the new Velma. She's an obvious self inserted, trauma dumping d!ck with no redeeming qualities what so ever that is just a massive @sshole to everyone with half of her dialog being nothing but complaining and the other half is just an endless stream of Marvel movie writing level quips. And if someone tries to explain their situation to her, she'll either just blow them off, make fun of them, or try to say that she had it worse, and by the end of it she becomes slightly less of a pr!ck, but not enough to really notice.

Abandoned at birth
Bounced between foster homes.
Had to steal to survive.
Lives in the Cesspool known as NYC.

I'd say her character is pretty spot on for a 20 year old being cast into a situation like she was.

You reviewed Cyberpunk as having a "good story", which is a game that similarly stars unlikeable quippy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ protagonists. And yet that didn't bother you for some reason, can't imagine why.

Seems like the only one equipped to answer this question is you!

Yup, not everyone in the world is likeable. It was designers choice.

and not every choice is a good one either.

just look at days gone, one of the worst characters in the history of video game, a whining man on a motor cycle complaining the whole time. But that's my taste, I love Frey, i think she is a great character and a unique one at that, most characters in open world games have almost no personality.

Again that's my taste, I'm sorry this does not appeal to you. That's why not every person play the same game, everyone's taste are different

Yeah, but you'd think someone in her situation would be a little sympathetic to other people going through a rough time. I mean in one scene she told one of her friends who's dad just died that she doesn't care and just wants to go home and then tries to one up her saying that she should be happy that she had parents in the first place. How exactly am I supposed to root for someone like that?

It is true from your point of view but its actually good thing for gamers as a whole, games as form of art should try different things, not only always safe options and good choices.

and your favorite game is GTA V. Wonder what differs of these 2 games. It's clearly not for you so just move along with your life and find and play another game you actually enjoy.

I think they made a great decision with the character, someone who stands out from your regular main characters, mixing fantasy with NYC spot on.

Now, I am trying to think positive as much as possible.

I believe the devs want her to grow as a person, from obnoxious young woman to...something stunning and brave.

but It just looks like obnoxious teenage girl wannna be hero.

well people who have had it that though do not tend to rely on other people and distance themselves to not get hurt. And after she had to give Homer up i can only assume she would close herself up even more distancing from other people and pretend not to care. If you listen/read very closely in the things happening in the game you can see that deep down she is a very caring person but she don't wanna show it because is makes her vulnerable to get hurt even more.

I sometimes watch videos from police interrogations, people with broken lives can be very very unlikable, its actually realistic. I think the problem is the other way around, too many games with killers and thugs makes them look like nice and smart guys, its very unlikely in real world.

what differs? one is actually well thought out and put togeather. the other is a slapstick of ideas that luminous used their prior fame (or infamy) to create.
one is a top selling game of all time that appeals to everyone

the other is niche af.

one is entertaining on a different level for people the other is just basic.

I won't spoil, but there's an arc (of course there is). Some of the supporting characters are also amazing.

and not even only criminals, this goes for most people who had a tough time in life growing up. Distancing themselves and pretending not to care is a coping mechanism to survive mentally. Speaking as someone who's been struggling with depression for almost my whole life I know how that works first hand.
