Need tips on applying spin
I've played this game a lot (on xbox) and I still can't apply spin effectively.

My character is rated 88 and has high control stats needed for it, but when I try to use it the ball often rolls onwards rather than spin back.

Just to confirm, I do hit the ball at the bottom for spin? I was told it was at the top but that doesn't make sense. Regardless, either option doesn't spin back.

I also find that I can have 2 separate shots on the same hole using the same club i.e. 60 wedge, and the first time it will spin back and the second shot will roll forward. This is with no spin applied and similar shot locations. I'm confused.

Myself. In the 2K games it is quite clear how to add spin on the ball and quite effective. I see little if any difference on a low or high shot spin. With my 60-62 wedges I get back spin but I don't seem to have any control over it, But with irons I have no ability to control it it seems at least not in my early stages of the game.

I find if im adding back spin... {aiming low on the ball) if you land past the hole for some reason it wont spin back as much as if you land short. i think this is bad coding.
and then there are times when you are hitting into an upslope on the green and that will add more spin pretty much pulling you to the front or even off of the green.
it also depends on your club- 9 iron through wedges will spin more.
check your golfer set up too- i picked a medium loft swing type- use high loft swing type and you should get better results

The shaper says high SHOT or low SHOT. A high shot should have more spin but I do not find it very adjustable or predictably effective admittedly I am early in the game without a lot of skill level build up yet.
You add spin by repeatedly tapping Q while the ball is in flight and change the direction with the Home, End, Delete and Page Down keys. So, for extra backspin you need to take your shot, then tap Q rapidly while holding down End. Hope that helps

What is Q on the contoller?

well I play keyboard and three click and pressing Q by itself or with the 2-4-8-6 keys as the settings-controls menu says or the Home-End-Del-PgDn doesn't do anything to change ball flight. Repeated shots using mulligans show no difference in ball behavior when they hit the green. I play in custom mode with the spin-control checked.

On an Xbox controller it is the A button.

Spin can only be applied to a certain level of difficulty. After that hitting spin while ball is in flight does not work

Yes I don't want to apply it in flight, I want to set up to apply the spin I desire just like in REAL golf.

High shots will give you some spin. Wedges, I almost always hit low or they spin off the green with my max level character. Long irons tho will not stop on the green so it get tricky

Yes I got my skills up a little so the high and low are having a little more effect, would like to see a broader adjustment range on the gauge, maybe that comes with more skill can't find a real explaination or a manual. 2K has height and spin control which is nice.
the amount of spin you get is impacted most by 3 things. the club you hit (i.e. SW vs 7Iron) the slope of the green where the balls lands, and most importantly the wind. a ball hit into the wind will have more spin than a ball hit downwind.

hitting lower on the ball does not really apply more spin. it makes the ball flight higher, which could add a little bit more, but it's negligible compared to the effect of wind and slope.

you cannot backspin long irons, even into the wind they will run out a tiny bit. mid irons will stop dead, short irons and wedges will spin back.

Yes have resigned to the fact that there is not the same spin control as with the 2K games even using the shot height adjuster. 2K gives you angle of the downswing and club facing.
