Anyway, try playing through the sponsorship/basic challenges. Those serve as a good tutorial to how the mechanics of the game work, they grant you money to spend on merchandise if you want to dress up your character from time to time or buy decent specs, and have 0 impact on your career stats, should you care about that sort of thing.
If you're level 1 you might be able to hit a stock 7 iron 150 yards. You hit level 15 and start adding some powerups to your club, you can get 170 yards, and it will be different at 20, 25, 30, etc.
I've had a maxed out player for so long that I know 100% my 6 Iron will go EXACTLY 200 yards with 1-5 MPH of wind and a perfect swing. There's no guessing for me, but there was A LOT at the beginning of the game.
