Accidental display resolution issue
When docked, I went into display and accidentally set it to a resolution my PC I'm docked to doesn't support. For some reason I can't change the display resolution at all anymore, and now any time I plug in my HDMI cable to my pc it just says the input timing isn't supported. So why was I softlocked out of using my dock? How do I change my resolution back?

Enable safe mode for external monitors. In console mode, that is. If you're in PC mode, simply use the Deck's display to change resolution for external monitor.

Already tried safe mode. Does nothing, gives me the same input timing error

Are you talking about desktop mode or game mode?

~/.local/share/kscreen/*

This directory has all the configs for desktop mode. You delete it and it resets your monitor configs.

Desktop mode works, it casts to my monitor with no issues. When I go into game mode, I get the input timing error on my monitor

I do not know where is the file in game mode.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4C18-08B5-DEC9-3AF4

External display is blank
External Display Safe Mode

This mode will help if an external display is not lighting up when connected to your Steam Deck. When enabled, your Steam Deck will pick a low resolution and refresh rate for your external display to improve the chances of successfully lighting up the display. This may help in situations where the connection between the SteamDeck and the external display can't reach full transmission speeds, e.g. when using a very long HDMI/DP cable, or the cable is somehow damaged, or there is some interference from external devices in the signal.

The best process to enable this is:

Unplug the Deck from the dock/hub
Set 'External display safe mode' to On in the Display menu
Plug the Deck to the dock
The display should now light up

I believe you can access the external display setting in game mode. Set it to safe mode.

I can't tell you why, but it's done nothing. It automatically turns off and does nothing every time I've tried it. It's insanely frustrating

I guess try to contact support. They might figure out a way to reset the settings.

Edit: while you are at it, report the issue with safe mode. It should still output something. If it doesnt, it kinda defeats the purpose of safe mode.

Support gave me the exact same answer you did... just a copy and paste. I really appreciate you trying to help. You can't imagine how frustrating this is. I only use my deck as a PC, only docked. It's so infuriating to have it work in every single way EXCEPT the way you use it

Yea. That is why I said to report it as a bug report.

Safe mode should be an always working option when all crap happens.

sudo dmesg > dmesg-logs.txt

Plug in the deck and run that command above. Attach it to steam support

sudo journalctl -b 0 > journalctl-logs.txt
You can attach journalctl logs too.

This link also has the APU reset

Battery storage can work too.

I fixed it through a really stupid way. I docked it and memorized the pattern to get to the "automatically set resolution" option, then pressed the controls on the deck to get there. Really stupid, yeah. Now for some reason I'm permanently stuck at 30 fps. My refresh rate and everything is set to 60, yet everything is locked to 30. Do you know why this would happen? Didn't touch the deck for 3 days, randomly happened

Yea. Report this issue to Valve support. You are shooting in the dark debugging. Terrible experience. I happy to got the display working. I hope the lock 30 is easier to fix than the dark screen.

I will report it. Sadly they seem to be very slow and inconsistent at responding. I appreciate your help, thank you again. Have a good one

i'm not sure if you're having the same issue, but it sounds like it.

The other day i was looking at the display settings to see if i could change the default resolution while docked. I set it to safe mode, and then my monitor which is 1440p suddenly said "out of range" which means the received signal from the deck was either too low or too high.
I checked my windows partition, my monitor displayed fine, I also tried a different HDMI cable in steamos but it still said "out of range"
I tried disabling auto resolution and setting it to something like 720p/1080p but as soon as I connected it to the dock it seem to reapply whatever settings it kept applying for my monitor.

I tried plugging the dock into my 4k tv, and it displayed fine on that.

I couldn't find anything about it, and i was about to reimage my deck when I thought maybe it was worth trying something.

with my steam deck connected to the dock, and the dock connected to my 4k tv, I disabled auto resolution and hovered over the 1080p option but i didn't press any button so it wasn't yet selected. With it still remaining selected but not set, I unplugged the dock from my 4k tv and plugged my monitor hdmi back in, which at first said out of range still, until i pressed A to accept the resolution i was still hovering over it and suddenly my display was back.

My guess is that steamos keeps some track of either displays it connects to and keeps a preference, so if you set it to something it can't display it remembers that but you have no easy way of resetting it.

I'm sure theres probably an easy Konsole command that would reset display preferences, and really there should be somewhere in the display settings but heyho.
I hope this is what you're struggling with, if not damn
