Issue with Apple Studio Display Monitor connectivity with audio
This is a bit of a long story so

TL:DR
Audio won’t project to my Apple studio monitor while connecting with Steam Deck Docking Station. Worked when I was first setting this up then suddenly audio only started coming out of the Steam deck.

Long version with more detail;
So to run down the situation, my personal set up includes an Apple Studio Display Monitor, when I bought the steam deck and docking station I couldn’t find a straight answer as to how to connect the whole thing. I was aware of the direct connection method with a third party thunderbolt cable without the docking station, but I wanted to get the docking station to work with the monitor. In my mind if I found the right cord to connect the monitor to the docking station it should work.
After months of research and testing connection methods I finally found a solution. I found that a Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 Cable supporting 8k@60Hz allows for the Steam deck screen to project to my monitor while attached to the Docking station. The first time in connects the screen flickered uncontrollably, but I found out after I pick the third provided resolution 2560x1440 (16:9) in display settings then at least restart the Steam deck twice, the screen is fixed. After fixing all of those issues I realized there was one left. While I was figuring out the display issue I realized sound was coming from my Steam deck instead of my monitor, but I know when I first plugged it in the sound came from the monitor just fine. I don’t know for sure but I think I messed with some settings when I was trying to fix the display and can’t figure out how to fix it. After I noticed the audio issue I tried going into the audio settings and trying to select “External Device” but after I chose a different setting to go to and came back to audio and saw it would immediately go back to speakers.
I did manage to find out in desktop mode that in the Volume Control settings, on the sound output tab the HDMI / DisplayPort3 option for audio was listed as unplugged. Mind I’m currently plugged in using the external monitor. I’m guessing that’s what’s caused the confusion.
This is where I’m currently stuck, it clearly reads the connection enough to project to the monitor but somehow not enough for sound to travel. Since I know the sound worked before I just have to figure out how it got disconnected in the first place so I could possibly fix this.

I never found anyone online who had a similar issue to me and managed to find a solution. This why this is such a long story. Hopefully through fully figuring this out, this story can help more people who have a similar set up to me.

I also asked Steam support about this issue but they said to post about it here.

If it takes DisplayPort over USB-C, omit the dock and connect the monitor directly to the Deck's USB-C. Then plug everything else into the monitor, using said monitor as a dock.

That method does work. I mainly just wanted to see if it was even possible to use the docking station with the monitor at all
