That's talking about gamepads. When extending the discussion to all kinds of game controllers, not all of them just-so-work. High-end steering wheels tend to come with own software which is required to properly use them which likely won't run on SteamOS.
But if it's just about gamepads, get ANY. Well, the usual caveat applies: don't go for the cheapest piece of Chinese crap you can find, buy something worth it's price, even if it's more expensive.
