Steam Deck

HDMI signal not detected
Issue: Official dock does not always output HDMI signal.

Issue only seems to appear with official dock.

As it happens randomly, I don’t know how it can be recreated. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I have followed all troubleshooting provided by support with no resolve, and was told to post it here.

It doesn’t matter if the Deck is powered on before or after connecting to the dock.

The only (temporary) fix I have found is to unplug the PSU from the dock until the signal is detected, then plug the PSU back in. Issue returns next time the dock is used.

I have the same problem. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, why am I spending money on this original accessory when it doesn't work? It's HDMI. What am I having a problem with HDMI, of all things??

Code related to controlling the display is an active field of development. The code is complicated and error prone. All hardware has bugs. The industry decided to go the opposite direction of coverage and quality. They decided less people should be touching or auditing the display controller while putting everything under NDA.

HDMI is turning into a dumpster fire because those same geniuses who created the Sony rootkit decided they wanted to make a display connector. HDMI is having their Boeing MCAS moment. You expect planes to always fly like how displays to always work. It turn out HDMI feel like innocent people are an acceptable casualty for their shenanigans.

I recently ran into the same issue too. It worked when I initially plugged it in, but it hasn't worked since. The HDMI Port on the Steam deck dock seems to be the issue. My solution is to try to use a USB-HDMI port adapter or buy 3rd party steam deck dock that hopefully doesn't have a faulty HDMI port. I'm going to try both possible solutions before giving up and just using my steam deck in handheld mode.

Mee too. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have original steamdock with latest firmware. Multiple different TVs. Nearly everytime I need to unplug/replug power to the dock, sometimes reboot, sometimes retry multiple combination of it in various sequence, sometimes the Moon needs to be full. I would expect such behaviour with cheap Chinese device, but not with such expensive original device. Forcing HDMI output is not rocket science and if Valve engineers are incapable to implement it right they should open source everything including the firmware and the community will fix their incompetence.

About that. HDMI forum is blocking AMD from implementing HDMI 2.1 into OSS drivers.

HDMI forum forbids either AMD or Valve for doing what you suggests.

Regardless of what technical issues are causing this, the user is not the problem and burden should not be on the user to chase down some complicated solution (if exist). The dock is a necessity for anyone who purchased this in order to play in the living room on their TV. The fact that mine cannot connect to the TV at all means the entire concept of a Steam Deck is totally pointless because it fails to meet basic conditions necessary for this advertised use case. I will be throwing my Steam Deck in the trash along with the Dock, and I will NEVER forget this experience. It’s sad to see that open source is still a failure in 2024. I wanted to believe.

hdmi trade group does not want open source to work at all. FOSS people are full of consumer abuse refugees. Our community will resist companies breaking our freedoms. looks at sfc lawsuit against vizio

So for me simply restarting the deck while it's plugged in seems to do the trick

Here's my full setup.

My Switch, WII, WIIU and PC through HDMI switcher (this one: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B071G4NXNH). The HDMI switcher is connected to a soundbar. The soundbar is connected to the projector.

All 4 devices work flawlessly with this setup.

When I tried plugging in the Steam dock through the switcher, it didn't work. I tried another HDMI cable, it didn't work either.

I plugged the Steam dock directly in the sound bar (with Steam deck plugged-in via USB-C). It didn't work.

I tried plugging it directly to the projector and with different HDMI cables, it still didn't work.

I've initiated a RMA of the steam dock and the new dock doesn't work either.

I bought a 3rd party amazon dock. When I plug-in directly in my projector, it WORKS. Steam Dock is to blame.

BUT. The Samsung soundbar doesn't work. When I remove the switcher and plug the projector to the soundbar and soundbar to the 3rd party dock, it doesn't work.

When I say it doesn't work, the Steam deck screen goes black, but no input is received in my projector (the screen stays black).

Any help is appreciated.

I'm returning the Deck and Dock. My post can be ignored.

This is still a problem. It's been over a year and there's no solution? I am giving up on the official dock I guess.

Yes, I felt infuriated after wasting so much time (several weeks in fact) trying to fix the no signal issues using the official docking station. Purchased a third party dock, which works well overall so I'm using that instead of the official docking station.

Which dock?

I'm sick of the official one myself. NOTHING, works, even after downgrading its firmware. No ethernet. No DP. No HDMI. usb hub worked fine for connect mouse/kb strangely enough, half the time only though. That's about it. I'm not going to sit here plugging and unplugging every god forsaken cable each time I want to connect to the tele. I should only have to concern myself with the ONE cable.

I am using an Arzopa Model S1 Screen and I have the same problem as everyone else.
The only difference is, that when i plug the power supply of the steamdeck right into the Arzopa screen instead of the dock, it seems to work fine.
So maybe when using the hdmi port, the deck and screen arent getting enough juice so the screen is not working?

Switch off the auto resolution and changed it to 1920x1080@60 instead on the deck. Problem solved.

Why would we want to manually change the resolution for every screen we connect to?

I'm sad the HDMI issue still exists after all this time. You'd think with the release of the new OLED model they might actually make a newer dock that works properly...
