Changing Keyboard layout in the Steam Deck settings
I want to change the layout from qwerty to qwertz but it's not possible at the moment. So it would be great if there was an option in the future to change it.

You have to change der virtual keyboard layout inside Steam Mode.
Go to Settings/ Keyboard/ activ keyboard.
Here you can add language layouts. By more then one language, a globe symbol appears at the bottom of the virtual keyboard.

In the Desktop Mode your only able to change the layout of a physical keyboard.

In German:
Um das Layout der virtuellen Tastatur zu ändern, muss man in den Steam Modus:
Einstellungen/ Tastatur/ Aktive Tastatur.

Yes please, don’t know why it’s not possible to change, it’s a very basic feature.

I just received my Deck and I’m French so using the AZERTY layout.
Yes, this is the first thing I noticed. Even in Desktop Mode there is only US keyboard localization.

It's possible to switch to a different keyboard-layout in Desktop-mode. Open the System Settings and then go to "Input Devices" in the "Hardware"-category in the tree-view on the left. Afterwards select "Keyboard" in the tree-view and change to the "Layout"-tab on the right side. There you are able to add additional keyboard-layouts or remove the existing one via the "Add"-button in the middle section.
As this is a user-setting it will persist even after System-updateds. Sadly it's not possible to change the language of the UI (via "Personalization" > "Regional Settings") but you can at least change the date- and number-format in Desktop-mode.

Nonetheless it's essential that we are able to change the layout of the onscreen keyboard while in gaming-mode as entering settings for Proton isn't intuitive when you don't know which key you have to press when using a non-QWERTY-layout.
I would also really appreciate this.
Would be great to have on the keyboard itself too.

I speak a few languages and some requires different keyboards such as cyrilic.
What would be the correct way to add more keyboard layouts, such as Lithuanian?

TYSM!!!!
For digital Keyboard:
Settings -> Keyboard -> Active Keyboards -> Edit
Select your wanted Keyboard Layout.

For physical Keyboards:
To make it work in Desktop Mode, you can change the Layout in Settings. Simply search "Keyboard" and you should find it.
To make it work in Game Mode:
go into Desktop Mode.
Open "/etc/environment"
Add the line:
XKB_DEFAULT_LAYOUT=de
(instead of "de" you can use "fr" or whatever you want)

Just like on the phone, I like to change my keyboard layout as I write in different language.
So console command isn't doable all the time.

afaik you can specify multiple keyboard layouts like this:
XKB_DEFAULT_LAYOUT=de,ru,el
But I'm not sure how to switch between them. I'd have to test it.

You can use multiple keyboard layouts and set a shortcut that works in Game Mode too.
Instead of "rctrl_rshift_toggle", you can use another shortcut. "rctrl_rshift_toggle" for example is "right ctrl + right shift", "lalt_lshift_toggle" would be "left alt + left shift" for example. Make sure, after switching back to Game Mode, to really restart once. Switching between Desktop and Game Modes sometimes doesn't always count as restarts and then the settings won't be applied yet. I hope this helps :)

Is there perhaps an update on this issue? I have the same problem and it's very annoying.
In Desktop mode my bluetooth keyboard works fine, but in Steam mode everything is back to a US layout and I can't find the right keys.

Unfortunately that didn't work either.
Update: It did work, just needed a system reboot! Thank you for suggesting it.

Glad it worked :D Already thought about possible reasons it didn't work. But I'm happy there's no need to troubleshoot now :D
But yeah, iirc switching to Gaming Mode isn't rebooting at all. And I had to use Shutdown instead of a simple Restart or smth.
