Some of us decided to run the desktop in gamemode instead. The alternative to bypass the dichotomy between game and desktop mode.

Edit: you can run non steam games in gamemode.
The thing is, I like desktops and multitasking. I like having a start menu where I have all of my applications even if I didn't add them to Steam and having a mouse cursor. I am just a computer guy, so I really want to keep using only Desktop Mode. I would need it the other way around, Game Mode in Desktop Mode and no, Big Picture Mode is close, but not close enough. The overlay with Big Picture Mode is almost always broken in the games I played.
