Steam Deck

Battery percentage shown when deck is off but charging.
My android does this. When it is powered off, but I plug it in, it turns just the screen on and shows the percentage of charge left on the device. You can watch it rise to 100% without turning the phone on. Would love this feature on the deck

If the phone was actually off you wouldn't be able to see anything on the screen. Same here.

This is wrong.

When I plug my phone in while it's off, it will display the batter level while it's being charged.

Well is the screen itself capable of reading the battery level? Or does the processor need to load the percentage font and battery logo, send it to the GPU, and then send the signal to the display?

Doesn't matter. The phone is able to display the battery level while the phone is charging.

It's been a thing on phones for a long time.

Doesn't matter.
It's matters in the sense that it's exactly the season why it's not on laptops and why it definitely won't appear in the Steam Deck.

"Definitely won't appear."

Such authority.

It just doesn't make sense. If you need to boot the OS anyways, might as well just boot into the proper UI.

Sweetheart, you don't know what you're talking about. Are you still using a flip phone? Android is a linux based OS, just like Steam OS.

Well, if you had to boot into the OS to display anything, then accessing the BIOS with a damaged or missing OS wouldn't be a thing. Since accessing the BIOS without any OS at all is a thing, we know for a fact that there is a way to display things without fully booting the OS. So if they really wanted to, they could probably add extra BIOS functionality to show charge state while otherwise "powered off".

Now, would it be doable on something like the Deck in a way that would be useful (not consume too much power itself, not interfere with sleep mode, not generate too much heat, etc.) I don't know.

Android phones can have boot sequences as custom as they want, while computers need to be IBM PC compatible. It's easier to implement when you don't have the baggage of a 40 year old standard.

I said OS since phones do it that way (like when iOS 6 style was replaced with iOS 7 battery icons when charging) but I guess you could do it thru bios (well, UEFI). Though it might get away from the IBM PC standrads.
The deck would still need to be on. So if it's on, might as well just boot the operating system anyways.

We're not talking about boot sequences. Watch the video. I set the powered off phone on a chargter and the screen shows a battery and then a percentage. It doesn't boot up.

This is still totally incorrect

your phone literally BOOTS into the battery display. It's not magic.
