Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Feature for desktop mode.
Say you install a .exe. The idea is, you dubble click it, then steam OS says "What version of proton do you want to use?" Select the version, then it tries to launch using it!

but you also need to select or create a prefix that your exe will run within. And also you might need to install dependencies into the prefix before the exe is able to launch.

might as well use "Bottles" from the store.

exe files arent linux files they are windows files. So supporting them outside of steam isnt really a needed feature.

To make them work then run wine or just add them to steam (as it creates the prefix) or create a prefix manually.

if you use proton then
You can install protontricks via flatpak (discover)

add these lines to .bashrc if it doesnt work and just reboot:
alias protontricks='flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks'
alias protontricks-launch='flatpak run --command=protontricks-launch com.github.Matoking.protontricks'

double clicking exe files should work and give you options for current prefixes.

I know exe are not linux, but it seems the themee that steamOS is trying to be a simple, simple that it could compete with windows. A feature like this would make windows scared.

wine on regular Linux distro already runs exe files on double-click and windows isn't scared.

But you have to download wine though, with steamOS, it would come built in.

It would just be SteamOS bundling in Wine.

windows is simple to match its users. linux doesnt need to compete in that regard.
its nice that wine/proton can run .exe but i believe steamos and proton had the effort put into them so it helps make the transition abit easier so that one day proton/wine wont be needed for aaa titles
but the topic isnt really part of your request that i believe has been answered
