so it's a problem of inconvenience but not actually a real problem

Nah, it is a real issue.

There are plenty of people who would not feel comfortable going into a command line interface to enable a VPN.
It is a portable device that relies on wireless connections (unless you get a dock but that's stationary). As others have noted what if I'm in Starpukes and want to have some coffee and play a round UNO. I need to use their open and pack sniffing wi-fi. A VPN protects me from that. In the year 2022 with built in kernel support there is no reason, none that it shouldn't have OpenVPN support.

being comfortable going into the command line at least proves that a person knows what a VPN is, and is not a simple advertisement victim.

And I know the people who want VPN will start to rage now because they think its the most important thing on planet earth.

take a shower and trim your neckbeard,
You are a fool and predictable :) Bloatware is not about size. What are you afraid of not using VPN on a gaming handheld? Your credentials are encrypted. Afraid of someone sniffing your sekura clicker credits?

Yeah I saw that, doesn't make you any less of a troll. Continue to plug your ears and do the predictable Linux user thing, calling everything you disagree with bloat and using the bandwagon fallacy.
You are calling that a person who is a daily VPN user who only uses linux on the deck. I highly suggest you go back and read the posts again so u understand the discussion and the point of the different people involved. You are the first one who got personal in a 50 reply discussion. Keep this in mind please.

I've been paying attention. Your argument is that the work required to officially add in support for it is unnecessary, & that it'd be """bloat""" since there is a hacky way to do it that gets wiped after every update. Ignoring that wireguard is not supported at all. Repeatedly forgetting (or just outright ignoring) VPNs are handy for connecting to Steam and playing steam games online when you otherwise aren't allowed to.
Oh finally an argument. Thank you so now we can have a discussion. Same questions for you: Where should valve draw the line to please everyone? Why should they stop with VPN and not with any other software remotely connected with gaming?
So there you have it. It depends. But not on my list of software in mind but it depends on each individual perspective. VPN is not essential for steam to work. And its not essential to play. Just like you said OBS is not. Other people would will say the exact opposite because they think streaming is essential for the gaming industry and that gaming today is popular simply because streamers replaced evening TV for a lot of people. But the reality is: Most people wont use it, no matter if its OBS or VPN. And exactly that is the point why I am totally fine with valve keeping the focus on the games in the first place as long as there is a very simple way to do it on your own. And thats just my opinion. In the end its up for Valve to decide.
Thats not essential. Thats nice to have. It doesnt stop steam from working.

It literally does though... Again you're just repeatedly ignoring this fact over and over and over. & if you're going to continue doing so then we're done here
No its not. If you are in a place where steam traffic is blocked steam will start in offline mode and you can use steam just as it did decades ago. And thus it is not essential for steam to work. I am sticking to facts that actually exist.
So there you have it. Again, its problem of inconvenience but not actually a real problem because steam works like it should and you literally can play thousands of games, just not your favorite multiplayer game in a very rare situation that will affect an absolute minimum of users. But as you stated we are doing circles right now. Would be glad if valve could do a statement to VPN. Gotta go to work now, have a nice day ✌️

Yeah you're not even trying to hide that you're trolling anymore. Don't let the door hit you on the way out
If you feel personally offended and feel like getting trolled by other peoples opinions, no matter how reasonable you find them, go to therapy. This is a discussion board. People come here to discuss.

other "not essential to being able to play a game" features (yet welcome, overall relevant to defining this as a better platform and gladly supported by Valve):
- desktop mode
- external controllers
- mouse & keyboard
- dock and external display
- system-wide complex controller customization
etc, etc, etc

it's an OS, it has an array of features because someone might need them, not because everyone will need every feature

if you don't have a reason to think SteamOS 3 will be worse by supporting this, let Valve speak for themselves in regards to prioritizing their requests backlog

I also need a VPN every other day - would be so much easier, if it was implemented into the OS directly and also into Gaming Mode.
