Chromecast/Miracast support
I like showing off the Deck to my friends and it would be incredibly useful to have a cast button in the quick menu. Steam Link is fine but not really meant for “check this out real quick” situations.

Yes, being able to show
your screen on a modern smart
tv wirelessly would be nice.

Yes, I want it too. Linux software already exists for it, as long as the Wi-Fi chip can handle it then it should be enabled!

Looks like the chip used by the Deck has support, but some work is needed to update the driver - Valve, plz fix!

I was playing Path of Exile through Miracast earlier on my laptop. 30 fps is 33.3ms frametime. There is noticeable input lag that isn't there with HDMI. From what information I gather Miracast uses h.264 compression and MS recommends the latency to stay under 500ms... LTT did a video about this last year.

Looks like realtek said they'll try adding it 9/29/21 but there doesn't appear to be anything yet according to https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commits/master/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtw88

A delay is not an issue when you're playing while looking at the deck, and you just want others to be able to easily watch along with you
+1 for the chromecast streaming.
Ontop of what has been described above, streaming the steam deck to a chromecast could also be incredibly useful for streaming video-content, using the steam deck as a sort of hot-fix for streaming things to a chromecast that would normally not be possible due to the nature of chromecast-ecosystems. Turning the steam deck into a sort of streaming-remote for your TV.

If you have a Chromecast with Google TV you can just download the Steam Link app and stream that way.

Thank you, that is very useful.

Unless Valve can lobby Realtek to open up their firmware, the miracast suggestion would not work. Realtek wificards are famous for their big fat firmware.

sudo iw phy0 info
Supported interface modes:
* IBSS
* managed
* AP
* AP/VLAN
* monitor
* mesh point

You need P2P-Client in the support interface modes for Miracast to work.

Im confused. Miracast works ok on my windows dual boot with the steam deck. So what exactly prevents it from working on linux? Isnt linux supposed to be easier and more widely available with this kind of stuff?

Would be nice for a quick show off to friends where you are still playing on the Deck but they can see what you are doing on a larger screen. No in advance setup needed unlike if you were to try to use Steam Link. If your friend has a cast enabled TV, you can just do it.
