even if this doesnt get added I will just have one on the desktop but switching to it will be a little annoyance
Yes I know we could install the desktop applications for these things. We don't technically 'need' dedicated functionality for these things.
We also don't need to eat soup with a spoon, we could just pour it on our faces. We don't need shoes either, lets just go everywhere bare foot!
But it'd be definitely bloody nice to have definitely.
On the off chance someone from Valve is reading this: Don't go nuts with it. It doesn't have to be crazy overloaded with functionality.
Just need an option to pick which folders locally to scan for media files, present them in a neat looking UI. Basic image slideshow functionality for the images, music files just need play/pause/stop/prev/next/shuffle/etc, mp3/wav/wma/ogg support would be nice. And for the video player, basic mp4/avi/etc file support, again play/pause/stop/prev/next/etc. Maybe playlists would be nice to have too.
The Steam Deck has amazing speakers, it'd be just nice to use them for listening to some music too. But desktop software for media is not really well suited for a handheld gaming device.
If there is not going to be a built-in music player, it would be nice to have more compatibility with normal desktop players. I'm currently testing all the music players available in Flathub, and currently the only one I have found with good functionality in Gaming Mode is Kodi, which is basically if Steam Big Picture Mode was open source.
To control that media player in the background, it would be great if the chord button configuration could be modified, although I'm guessing from the GUI that's right around the corner.
Also, it would be very nice if gaming mode could have per-stream volume control in the quick menu to modulate the volumes of multiple streams.
If a player really wants to annoy you with music they will.
The good news on that front is that there is a well established linux standard for media player interaction called MPRIS
MPRIS allows common commands like play, pause, stop, fast forward, rewind, next and previous can be passed to the media player from several input methods (most commonly keyboard media keys, but it can be anything really, even UI buttons on a custom desktop widget or notification area of the taskbar)
It also allows the media player to offer information for usage in other apps and OS components, like song title, artist, album, year, current position and total duration, even the cover art.
For basic interaction, it would then be enough for Steam to implement a generic MPRIS-based music UI (especially on Gaming Mode). This would be great for people who centralize their musics on streaming services like Tidal or Spotify, because it's not easy to work with those directly, and there are several of them.
On the other hand, AFAIK the MPRIS interface does not offer a way to manage the playlist (especially to navigate the library, favourites, etc and add stuff to it), so at some point calling up the original app UIs of those players is hard to avoid... which is a bit painful on Gaming Mode due to it being quite unsuitable for multitasking.
It's also a shame to not have an internal player because it would waste steam's own library of OSTs and leave those untapped or less easily enjoyed by requiring the user to set up some 3rd-party player, unoptimal cataloguing, no way to auto-pick stuff related to the current game, etc.
