Add CUPS / Print Support to Desktop
The desktop mode does not currently ship with an ability to print. Since the file system is immutable we can't easily / permanently install a CUPS service to allow a user to easily connect to a printer. Valve, please add the CUPS service or some other way for us to add a printer.

It's literally called SteamOS... but OKAY :steamfacepalm:

https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/download?ver=steamdeck
But the deck isn't called SteamOS, it's called Steam Deck.

This is not a profound, intelligent, or compelling argument. We are here in support of adding printer support to SteamOS. You seem either lost or confused, more likely both. Best wishes.

to everyone "defending" Valve:
1) are you a Valve employee speaking in official capacity?
2) are you their biggest employer, deciding what they're gonna prioritize next because it's your money more than it's anyone else's?
3) do you know any significant negative side effect to SteamOS 3 from having CUPS installed?

if no, get this:
"I don't need it" != "it's not useful"

Steam OS runs so well for everything else I do that I'm starting to get annoyed whenever I find a reason to boot up my old Windows PC. Please Valve, add native printer support so that I can stop relying on terrible Microsoft products. It's a basic feature expected for any PC. It shouldn't require a workaround with sudo.

I do not have any plans to use a printer with SteamOS, but it's kind of baffling that if ever wanted to do it, i couldn't.
As long as print support doesn't affect system performance on any way, +1

There is glabels in the software center. how is one supposed to print the labels after making them in the program available from the software center if printing is not available. This is truly facepalm time.

And the entire LibreOffice suite...

I tried this a few weeks ago and it was great! This time? Not great. Won't install cups. It throws dependency errors on last systemctl enable there when it's trying to do cups.

You don't need to do it from a VM - you can install the required components directly.
It's a little tricky, but doable. And it is wiped out everytime the OS is updated. But I made myself a little script that I can run after each update to re-enable it.

Here is what I run:
# Before launching this, you need to set a password for the "deck" user # run "passwd" from the commandline # then run the following commands with "sudo" # disable readonly steamos-readonly disable # initialize and populate pacman PGP keys pacman-key --init pacman-key --populate archlinux # CUPS + KDE printer manager GUI PACKAGES="cups print-manager system-config-printer" # Auto-discovery via DNS # https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Avahi#Hostname_resolution PACKAGES="$PACKAGES nss-mdns" # WARNING: requires to update the /etc/nsswitch.conf file # use the following: # sed -i s/mymachines resolve/mymachines mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] resolve/ /etc/nsswitch.conf # Optionals (helpful) # foomatic pre-built ppd drivers PACKAGES="$PACKAGES foomatic-db-engine foomatic-db-ppds foomatic-db-nonfree-ppds" # ghostscript for non-pdf printers PACKAGES="$PACKAGES ghostscript" # cups-filters for driverless printers PACKAGES="$PACKAGES cups-filters" pacman -Sy $PACKAGES systemctl enable --now avahi-daemon systemctl enable --now cups # re-lock the filesystem steamos-readonly enable # Now, to add a printer: use the GUI from settings, or from your internet browser with http://localhost:631/admin

I definitely think it would be better to have it part of the default OS - but maybe this will help you.

Scribus too. I print things as an accessibility accommodation all the time. I print email, reformat epub files and print them, print academic papers, etc. In the 3 weeks that I had it working I was very happy to print on my Steam Deck. I also buy (and make) a lot of indie ttrpgs and it was great to think that the Steam Deck could be a computer for that level of creative work but for some reason they decided to remove printer support. It's the weirdest flex

I'd love printing support on SteamOS (for Steam Deck Desktop Mode) as well!

Besides printing, what other things have you noticed that have forced you back to using your Windows computer?
Not much really. It took me several months to finally find a game with a graphical glitch (red lines across the screen in Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb) that I preferred playing on Windows. Outside of that and printing I've been able to do everything else on the Steam Deck using a little help from Wine.

Strange. Everything is installed and working for me now. But I didn't get an update in a while, so I didn't have to run this again.
Can you give me the error messages you get?

Still waiting on official printer support. What are people using in the meantime?

I was running my docked Deck as a main PC for about a month gaming and working on my novel and everything else. When printing time came, what a bummer to discover I needed a workaround! Back on my actual desktop now and barely even use the Deck besides when I go places... :(
