Transferring files from Windows PCs to Steam Deck and vice versa
Please can you look at providing a way to transfer files from our main Windows PCs, to the Steam Deck?

I have some emulator stuff on my windows PC and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get it transferred onto the SD Card.

I just used a flash drive to transfer my files over. I have a usb-a to c adapter that came with my Pixel phone.

I use warpinator to transfer between devices, I think there is a Windows version, not sure if it's cross compatible with Linux.

Just use ssh and sftp its already included in the device.

Can confirm. Warpinator transfers files SUPER QUICK and easy. The Windows app is called Winpinator. It works cross platform with the Windows app too.

FYI there is even an android version of Warpinator and it's also incredibly easy and fast, integrates perfectly with the share button in other apps, etc

and a beta version for all sorts of Apple devices:

IMHO for quick transfers there is just nothing like Warpinator, but if you need to sync folders between systems, there are other great tools too:

i was the exact same and every solution seemed very difficult,

go to the discover store and get warpinator, its incredibly fast and easy to use so no need for the terminal at all,

on windows just go and download the warpinator client, once its installed it will be like 2 or 3 clicks and your files are sent

Explain it to me. So I set up a windows network share? And the access that from the steam deck?

yes, that's possible too, but be warned that windows shares can be a major PITA to set up in a way that linux can access them (the reverse is usually much simpler) because microsoft has never been very keen on making things interoperable with other OSs

You mean I set up the steam deck as a network share and have my windows pc access it?

SMB based network shares in Dolphin require Samba, which is not included in the SteamOS image. The best feature request would probably be, "Please include Samba in the base SteamOS image".

that will probably require installing the "samba" package which in turn will probably require making the system writeable... not recommended for people who aren't linux-savvy...

...while @Taktloss was talking about making a win10 network share (which I mentioned is probably still a PITA) and using the Deck's desktop mode file manager to access this

that's why Warpinator and Syncthing (both peer-to-peer solutions promptly available as flatpaks on linux and easily installable on windows too) became the goto choices on the Deck (at least for now)

This exactly why I think the feature request should be integrating samba into the SteamOS image as a short to medium term fix. I think a long term fix should be integrating a warpinator-like feature into the Steam client directly. This way standard and power users are both served.

warpinator is already pretty convenient due to being available as a flatpak, and Valve must be careful not to fill up the 64GB units with OS features leaving too little room for games and user data... not sure how big it is

samba on the other hand is a pretty minimal size package, but usually doesn't come preinstalled in other distros due to some technical issues I don't quite understand

that being said, they could work on a "welcome screen" offering optional stuff users tend to like having around (a pretty feature in linux distros for PCs), and Warpinator & Syncthing would definitely make my cut to being listed there

When I say "steam client feature", I do mean base steam, not Deck specific. This may add bloat, but considering quick share features like this are standard on Mac and Windows (Air Drop and Nearby Share), I think it's worth even a few hundred MB.
