Double controller inputs via USB while docked
Hello all,
I’ve recently came across any issue where any USB-powered controller through a dock will produce double inputs on the Steam Deck.

For example, if I am in a game’s menu, and I press down on the control pad, the cursor will jump two spots down.
This also affects the control stick.

Here’s some findings of mine:

-The OS menus are fine, this issue only occurs in games.
-The following controllers have this problem: PS5, 8BITDO Ultimate, and other controllers connected to those brick-patterned 8BITDO controller adapters.
-This problem persists across multiple docks.
-Bluetooth works fine.

I’m to believe that this is some sort of SteamOS problem - perhaps related to Steam Input in some manner?

I’m on the latest build and am willing to try any suggestions (well, besides factory reset… that’s only if I really need to).

That's similar to the issue I am experiencing on remote play as well. I am having an issue where the DPAD is registering one press and then a hold down, until it hits the end of a menu or comes to a stop on something in the game. But my issue is with bluetooth connected controllers. They work correctly when not on remote play / when I play a game locally though.

This aligns with my testing. It’s strange that apparently Bluetooth is unaffected by this problem.

I have this problem with both of my 8BitDo Ultimate Wireless controllers (latest firmware). They work fine if I put them into Bluetooth mode, but then I lose rumble functionality. My Xbox controllers have no problem in Bluetooth mode.

The problem occurs when using the USB dongle to connect it to the dock, or when connecting directly through a USB cable. It happens in some games like River City Ransom: Underground, which I believe is a native Linux game. It also occurs on various emulators like RetroArch. I can see that each controller appears as two controllers, one called "8Bitdo Ultimate Controller" and one called "Steam Virtual Gamepad (2)". I know one of the "Steam Virtual Gamepad" controllers is the Steam Deck itself, but there are three of them when I have both controllers connected.

I suspect that it has something to do with native Linux programs. Games using Proton appear to be fine. The Steam Deck settings do not show any extra controllers. It's just in Linux programs, as far as I can tell.

I noticed this problem with the 8BitDo Wireless (non-BT) when I started playing Vampire Survivors docked (to try out the new co-op mode). I fixed it by flipping the switch on the back of the controller from "X" to "D", and now it works fine! No more double inputs!

Same for me! It drives me crazy. Apparently it detects 2 contrôler instead of one when steam input is activated. Problem disappear if steam input is disabled, then you loose steam input functionality. Steam can you not just let us inhibit one of the 2 instance of the controler so we can keep using steam input. Really annoying.

I've had the same problem with my 8-bit do ultimate on USB connection (2.4Ghz). Sometimes double input, then in Guacamelee Super turbo championship edition, I end up controlling both player1 and 2 at the same time.

I'm connecting through the Steam Dock via USB. Xbox controller (wired) did not cause this issue. It can be bypassed by connecting the controller via Bluetooth, but it is a bit annoying, as my setup was using Bluetooth on my PC et 2.4Ghz on my Steam Deck.

Same issue

I had the same issue across Bluetooth and wired controllers. The solution that worked for me was going into the game that was causing the issue and setting the controller options to force steam input. This even fixed issues I was having in the steam overlay menu.
