Controller Layout template not loading

The issue is as follows:

1. Steam
2. Settings
3. Controller
4. “Non-Game controller layouts” > Edit
5. “Current Layout” > change template…

Just see a steam logo spinning….. forever.

Restarted, shut down and turned WiFi off and on to no avail.

Existing games work ok with changing layout automatically but new installed games can’t apply template.

Device is brand new with OS Version 3.4.6 (Build 20230313.1)

It works just no search tool if I go to desktop mode and navigate to the controller settings in steam app.

Now my issue has gotten worse, at first it was only the desktop mode controller config I couldn't change. Now I can't change any controller layout anymore just like OP. Makes some games unplayable on Steam Deck for me.

This is still unfixed. Both in current stable and current beta.

The issue gets triggered when you enter layouts for the desktop profile and then it bugs out all the other profiles.

As described above:

1. Steam
2. Settings
3. Controller

2. Choose layout/template

Spinner forever.

The only way to workaround that is to reload the client.

There is no way though to change the layout of desktop profile from any saved layout/template.

This started happening for me recently. The desktop mode controller option workaround does work. but it's a workaround.

Troubleshooting steps:
restart steam, game controller profiles work but as soon as you try and change the profile for desktop they break, no dice.
restart deck, no dice.
factory reset, no dice
re-image deck, no dice
re-image and use different steam account, no dice
nuclear re-image option; burn a lili usb of gparted, nuke all partitions on the ssd and re-image, no dice
this is super stupid: disable static ip reservation, nuclear re-image, brand new steam account, no dice.

wash-rinse-repeat all above steps but swap to both beta and/or preview builds. 404 no dice found.

in steamdeck mode it's completely impossible to view other steam controller profiles from the community for desktop layouts.

Whole new UI in the client. Code sharing between various UIs improved. Improvements to sharing/exporting profiles.

All useless. Such a simple bug remains. It's getting ridiculous.

I haven't been able to change any controller layout for any of my games, which means several are unplayable. Concerning to see such a core functionality apparently completely broken

Have you tried in Desktop mode which the method I detailed above?

It works fine for me but not for everyone.

My controller settings are completely broken now. All I tried to do was to have two templates for GeForce Now. It stopped taking input changes, then wouldn’t let me change the layout. Now I get the spinning logo on the controller settings screen. This is a major bug that severely limits the Deck’s functionality. It needs to be prioritized by the dev team. It’s going to impact more and more of the Deck user base if it can be replicated so easily. There appears to be some corruption at the OS level.

Agreed. This is the most major bug I've encountered so far, even worse than the sound issues with the official dock. I do however fear that this is something at the Steam account level (cloud settings) since otherwise a factory reset of the deck would solve the issue which it doesn't, so they might just solve this issue manually on a case by case basis. I really hope I'm wrong, I do not want to deal with Steam support.

I think you’re right. After investigating this a bit more I believe this is a cloud issue. In my case I was saving a template while playing GeForce Now on Edge. It probably got confused because I was logged into Steam via GeForce Now and the Deck. It probably failed to save the layout as a result, and now there is probably some corrupted controller settings save file in the cloud on Valve’s side.

Yes, the controller templates are stored on the cloud.

We should be given the option to purge the templates through the Steam settings.

Hence why no matter what you do, format, rebuild, another deck etc, the problem returns each time. It’s to do with our individual profiles.

My theory is, the priority for the Steam Deck is “first impressions”. Get visuals (UI) looking good and the games working. Everything else is at the very bottom (or not even on the list)

I’m quite lucky to get around it by using the desktop mode. Others aren’t so lucky which makes the steam deck pretty much unusable, which is what I experienced before discovering a workaround.

This issue really needs more attention and a developer needs to respond.

I have never been able to replicate this issue on my own Deck. However, I was able to replicate it on the *Windows 10 Desktop* Steam client (built April 28, 2023, Steam package ver. 1682708537) in New Big Picture Mode using a Steam Controller or a Sony DualShock 3. As described, I would select Desktop Configuration -- and then attempting to change it from the box at the top caused the Steam Logo to appear and spin forever. Same issue, right?

Steam Client Beta build May 5, 2023 - Steam package ver. 1683314987 fixed it for me -- again, in Win10 New Big Picture Mode, but perhaps enough code might be shared between the Windows and Linux versions that the latest Deck beta update may fix it? Might be worth a try, I dunno

well I don't have a steam deck, but now that steam has pushed this UI to replace the previous big picture mode UI on Windows, I am now affected by this bug :(

I am having this problem too and is very annoying... I cannot understand how this bug is not a priority for Valve, I didn't realize until I tried to load a save template for a new game
