Thanks. I've been having more trouble with this thing than enjoyment. Feels like an alpha product.
Enabled Beta update channel and it did check update but not download anything as "up to date".
i'll suppose i'll wait for next up date but having researched online, this issue with custom templates issue has been around for 12 months. perhaps more of a feature than a bug.
Also weird, changing the template in games works until I try to change the layout in Settings/Controller/Non-game controller layout/Desktop layout. As soon as I try that, changing the layout for any game doesn't work anymore until I reboot the Deck, just shows the Steam logo spinning forever.
Thanks for taking time to respond.
I’ve been doing some more testing.
If I download a game from my library, which has not been installed yet, the template for that game does not download with it.
I can see the controller scheme in the library that it will use but the game itself does not switch to it.
Existing games, those installed prior to this issue, switch to new controller scheme fine but I can’t change them mid game.
Unless I spend time mapping my own bottoms mid game, I’m out of luck at the moment. Even then, it might crash on me as it’s that fragile.
I’ll give it a few days and write to Valve. This deck is a few days old and the frustration is almost unreal.
Regarding the unrelated (?) crash you mentioned, that might be the bug I was searching around for - I posted a write up on how to replicate it over here
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/1/6063574513310254108 , and another user had previously thought it a memory leak over here

I am coming to believe Steam Input Controller Settings is just buggy *in general* across the entire Steam Platform, even on the PC/Desktop/Windows version of Steam. If the Deck team sees our posts I hope they forward this along to the Input dev team...
Thank you for the detailed response. I’ll review your URLs.
I sure hope there is proactive dev activity. I did check previous posts and see engagement. I have not written to “support” yet as I feel they would direct me here first and quite rightly as I don’t mind.
Last night I tried a few more things.
- logged off account and logged back < no change
- found the “controller_base” directory library files and deleted the lot. < no change though it did verify the files when I returned to game mode and the files re-appeared. Another directory with the .vdf files and also deleted the lot. Again, no change.
The idea of mapping all the buttons post game launch is going to be cumbersome. I might try this for one game for testing purposes.
I need more technical stuff to try. I’m ok with Linux (I do tech support for Linux cybersecurity) I’m just not familiar with proton and steamos yet..
It is not fit for purpose. It feels almost like a £500+ paperweight.
I should not have to do this on a brand new device.
I think Valve’s main priority is first impressions. This controller issue has been around way too long and I don’t think there is any fix to it, ever! It is the least of their concerns.
If support is directing you to the community, this means that there is an enormous backlog of problems in their support queue.
I doubt my refund request is going to change their priority by any means. I’m not “waiting” around for a fix.
When I filed my own report, I said to Steam Support myself that I didn't think my issue a hardware defect based on how extremely specific the circumstances were. I was hoping they would attempt to test the problem and get back to me. Instead, they agreed with me, told me they did not have an immediate fix, and directed me to make a post here on this forum for the dev team. I never got any impression that Support were unwilling to help me -- more that they were ... unable to do so immediately, which makes sense because it's a software issue, which is harder and slower to pin down.
That said -- I found the solution to my crash problem! I'm posting it at the other two threads. It was the Performance Overlay all along. Does disabling it has any effect on your Template issue too?
Doesn't work for my template loading issue, still infinite spinning Steam logo. But was worth a try.
I will agree with you, it is software more than hardware. I haven’t really got the time an energy to play ping pong with support. If I was given some technical things to go off, by all means.
The problem has been around for as long as the steam deck was released to the public. Only a speculation but I don’t think the percentage of this particular issue out weighs those who don’t have issue. So the priority to fix this is very low indeed.
My settings are mostly stock, with the exception of the “Developers mode” to disable the power management for WiFi. With this setting enabled, my issue with steam deck can’t reach the the steam servers or internet is to the point it becomes an even heavier paperweight.
I’m discussing the return of the steam deck with support. It’s going ahead with the return. Unless of course some miracle occurs and a valve employee responds to this post before I part ways with it.
I restored the device back to factory. Just as a test.
Initially, it looked good. The templates menu progressed. But this time I could not see the community templates. I tried a game but sadly no joy. Strangely, when I selected the “games” template it kept reverting back to the desktop template. I restarted the system as I had to alter the WiFi setting in developer mode.
After boot, I’m back to same old. Now that there are no games installed, it’s even more useless as it was before.
It is still stuck in “Official Layout for - Desktop Configuration”
I have a workaround.
Need to go into Desktop Mode > Steam > Library search for game > below the “Play” there is a menu with (Store Page, Community Hub etc) at the end there is “Controller Layout”.
From here you can access Community templates from the community tab and apply it. Same applies for any other game.
The steam “loading” logo initially does appear but will load correctly within 10 seconds.
Though, returning to gaming mode doesn’t change that loading issue but at least you can apply a specific to the game in desktop.
Now I’m considering whether to continue the return. I can technically play games in both modes.
Hope this helps anyone else.
I for one am keeping my Deck - it sure has its quirks but it's nowhere near as glitchy as my modified PS Vita (beautiful machine ... nightmare to troubleshoot)
No problem. Keep in mind though that this is only a workaround, not a solution. The bug still persists.
I’m not really sure what triggered it. I wouldn’t recommend attempting to reproduce it either as there is no way to reverse it…yet.
I received the return instructions yesterday and I won’t be able to return it this week as Easter weekend is approaching. I will continue to fault find. But you’re quite right, the steam deck sure does have its quirks.
I've had my deck for exactly two days and I've spent both days trying to fix this issue. I tried some of the stuff mentioned here, I even did a factory reset twice. I'm giving up. I guess my options are to work around it (which bugs the heck out of me because it's literally a brand new device) or return it. I don't know what to do. I'm not wealthy, spending this much money was a big decision and I was super excited for it.
