dark souls prepare to die menu soft lock

when making a character name or messing with the button maping the game will soft lock me when i interact with them, i can use the steam kyeboard to create the word but after i go to put it in the name, the name box stays empty and i can't move the selector at all. the same thing happens when i interact with button inputs as when i go to change the movement the input stays blank and i can't out of it
