Steam Deck

Steam Deck

PS5 controller PS button not working
Question for the community and devs.

The PS button on dualsense controller seem to not work properly anymore, when paired via bluetooth, the Steam Deck recognizes the « PS button » input but doesn’t open the steam menu anymore.
However the button still works as shortcut such as « PS + square » still brings up the keyboard for exemple.

I’ve connected an xbox controller and it finally works as intended, the Xbox button properly brings up the Steam Menu.

If you have the same issue, then it’s a PSA for the devs, if not, then it’s a me problem lon

The most common cause of this is that gyro is enabled in the Guide Button Chord Configuration.

Settings -> Game Recording -> Record Manually -> Shortcut Keys

Open the configuration and edit the layout. Set gyro behavior to none.

Damn almost though you had it, sadly, game recording was off, turned it to « manually » just in case and all shortcuts had gyro set to « none »
In fact, all SteamDeck’s shortcuts and bindings have gyro set to none.

Thank god other controllers works because I was getting really annoyed at navigating SteamOS’s gaming mode using « PS + right analog stick » as a mouse.

I might have a theory that it’s a stick drift or touch pad issue.
I’m kinda betting on the track pad as the steamdeck shows a little drift on the right stick but well within the deadzone.
I think it’s trackpad related because when holding the « home » button of the dualsense the mouse cursor instantly appears on screen.
But on the xbox controller it only appears if the right stick is moved.

So much mystery…

If gyro is off, then you'll need to increase the deadzone of the right stick. That will stop cursor movement when the PS Button is pressed.

Settings -> Controller -> Calibration and Advanced Settings

This will fix the problem.

I tried this exact thing and it didn’t work.
I even tried to connect my very very drifty joycons and even my switch pro-controller and they also worked just as intended despite the drift.

Are you certain that you're adjusting the settings for the DualSense and not the Steam Deck?

Just to elaborate a little more..

When you press the guide button (Steam, PS, Xbox, etc.) it loads the Guide Button Chord Layout.

When you press the Steam button, it normally opens the Steam menu. But if you press the button and move the mouse cursor, it will not open the menu.

What is happening here is that something is causing the mouse cursor to move. This can happen if you have gyro enabled for the DualSense or if the right stick deadzone is too small.

The place to increase this deadzone is located here:
Settings -> Controller -> Calibration and Advanced Settings

It's easy to test the deadzone. After you set the deadzone, back out and press the Steam button. If the cursor moves, the deadzone is too small and needs to be increased. Test the DualSense as well.

Make sure gyro is off for the Steam Deck and DualSense. Also, make sure the deadzone is large enough for both. It's something that can be easy to miss, calibrating one but not the other.

After that, I think it should work for you. If it doesn't, look for other places that could be causing mouse movement. In the Guide Button Layout, the deadzone source should be set to controller preference. But if it's set to no deadzone or custom with 0 deadzone, that can cause drift. Or if you're using a custom config that has mouse on the left stick, that will have to be calibrated as well.

Hope that helps.

This worked for me. I had to turn on game recording on and remove gyro form the controller layout
