Black screen on switch to desktop - regularly happens
Version - OS channel "Beta", Steam Client Update Channel "Steam Deck Stable"
OS Version 3.6.8 - OSBuild 20240625.100, SteamVersion 1719259903
(Latest as of 030724)
OLED 512, several months old.

Symptoms -
Black screen on switch to desktop (2 black screens every 3 attempts), requiring either a hardpower off to recover or connect in a dock with another monitor where the layout is messed up. Sometimes it works better if there's no SD card in the slot, but can still occur. The dock shows that it is working and alive, but the screenoutput is just wrong for the screen so it shows up as black.
Has been occurring for weeks now, unsure when it started.

Same issue on my oled. Rather annoying bug (yea I know it's a beta)

Same issue since updated to 3.6.8 on 512GB OLED. When black screen happens, if I force the deck to reboot and restart the system again (2 reboots in a row basically). Only then I can access desktop mode, but only once. Then the black screen come back. My deck has no Cryo, no decky loader. A clean deck with no tweaks.

Edit: Revert back to Stable just to make sure it's a beta problem, and confirmed it is.
So, hope they fix it soon.

I second this. SteamOS 3.6.8, enrolled in the family beta. My 1TB OLED will only reliably boot to desktop mode once, after that it more often than not results in a black screen with functioning haptics if I attempt to load desktop mode. The system is only recoverable by holding the power button to fully power off the deck, then booting normally.

same issue here on the family beta, even after a complete re imaging of the deck and switching to beta, it still happens on my OLED

Same issue, same OS (Beta), 1TB OLED

Same. 512 GB OLED upgraded to 2TB. It seems 50/50. Sometimes desktop launches into a black screen. Sometimes it doesn't. When it does, the only option is a hard reset. Since Beta 3.6.8.

I actually tried a full system restore, and even with a completely clean and restored, updated system it still occurs on Beta 3.6.8

reset desktop mode
~/.local/share/kscreen/*

Unfortunately deaddoof, that solution isnt completely reliable. I found on reddit a recommendation to add "rm -rf ~/.local/share/kscreen/*" to the ~/,bash_profile file so that it automatically purges kscreen configs on every boot. However as I said, that isnt reliable. It worked for a couple times, then i got the black screen again when switching to desktop mode.

Oh wow. You should send your edid to Valve or check your cables. Wow.

Yeah, it's so annoying when you grab it from a dock and realise you have to reboot now... (beta 3.6.8, OLED). Waiting for a fix.

Tested on 3.6.9 - no luck.
