In the BIOS (turn off, then hold volume up, press power, wait for boot loader) I changed USB Configuration -> USB Dual Role Device from DRD -> XHCI. This solved the problem. DRD (Dual Role Device) is still a relatively new standard that I assume a lot of these audio devices don't support.
Based on multiple comments I read, older LCD decks have XHCI on by default, but for some reason they changed the OLEDs to have DRD on by default.
Worked like a charm for me! Hopefully that can help you and others pulling their hair out looking for a fix!
I can confirm that this does NOT completely resolve the issue. The dongle will work for a bit, especially if you have the dongle plugged in as the Deck restarts. However, if you put the Deck into sleep and wake it up, audio does not play through the dongle (even though the dongle is still shown as connected in SteamOS). Still looking for a proper fix to this issue.
Are you talking about desktop mode or game mode? It sounds like Pipewire remembered the wrong settings for you device.
XHCI and DRD resolves connection issues.
Pipewire changes your output in response to events.
Game mode. Switching from DRD to XHCI resolves some issues, but does not completely fix the issue for me as the dongle doesn't initialize correctly as a device when the Deck wakes up from sleep. Others have also reported the same issue in other threads and two of my friends have the exact same issue, even after switching away from DRD. I'll probably have to contact Valve support and ask if they're looking into this.
It's a bummer, and I hope Valve fixes it sooner than later. It seems they are looking into it given the fact that they moved away from DRD in one of the preview updates.
As someone who plays on my commute, not being able to reliably use my earbuds while simultaneously using the Deck's impeccable sleep mode basically means the Steam Deck OLED is out of contention for me. In the meantime, I just won't use my Deck out of the house, and take my Switch with me instead.
Install the anker soundcore software on your phone, pair your ear buds to your phone, plug the dongle into the usb c port of your phone and update firmware on the dongle and ear buds.
After doing this my audio dropout issues after launching into games is resolved.
