But it just doesn't work; as soon as I connect them, the game/discord don't get any audio from the mic, doesn't matter which input device I choose
English is not my language so there may be some different of options.
1. Go to desktop mode.
2. Open Setting>Audio.
3. Change Playback Device to "Headphones".
Select "Internal Microphone" as port in Record Device, then its name will become to Internal Microphone.

After above, below setting may be help to use Discord or other chat apps.
Change input to "Filter Chain Source" and change output to "Headphones".

Would it still work when going back to gaming mode?
Yes, it is. I've add Discord into steam library. Just launch it under gaming mode and it's working good.
Yes, I actually have to do it every time I plug the headphones.
It would be really nice if we could just change it from the Gaming Mode.
