Fix**!!
Try this please
Go to the battery icon
Go down to "show perf overlay in steam" and tag it

Thanks but that was the first thing I tried. Alas, switching it on and off, or trying to adjust the number of details, doesn't do anything.

Oh yes - something (no idea what?) seems to trigger the performance overlay to pop up at random times. For me this is frequent - basically every time I try to use the Deck.

I have not yet found a way to reliably turn it off. The closest I found is:
  1. Open the game settings, with the "..." button,
  2. Select the battery menu - that's the "Performance" setting. No it doesn't make sense why would it make sense?
  3. Make sure you're in advanced view - the button will say "Basic View," if it says "Advanced View" click it. That's why you don't do view switching that way, but I digress.
  4. Make sure "Use per-game profile" is off. There's probably a way to use it otherwise, but I'm tired and annoyed I don't care.
  5. Set the Performance Overlay Level to 1. Yes, enable it. If you got hit by the bug, it was probably at 0, and changing it won't do anything right now. See?
  6. Now quit your game, push the "Steam" button, select power, select restart. That way because we're in the land of magic - we have no idea what counts and what not.
  7. After restart, get back in the game.
  8. Go to the performance menu again - "..." button, battery icon.
  9. The overlay level should be where you left it. Set it to 0.
  10. Overlay should disappear. If you're like me, so did the desire to play a game on a Deck.
  11. Turn off the Steam Deck.
  12. Sigh deeply. Make a mental inventory. Did you take your meds? Did you sleep well? Have you hydrated? With something that's not an energy drink or super sweet? When was the last time you ate? What position are you in, are you unconsciously ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with your blood flow.
  13. Get up, if you can. Stretch, if you can.
  14. If you can, go outside, and find some grass.
  15. Touch the grass.
  16. Meditate on how consumer entertainment products were supposed to help alleviate the stress of living in a late stage capitalism society - but instead they became a source of additional stress.
  17. Consider maybe finding an in-person community, and an activity to perform physically, outside.
  18. Realize that if you had the time, health and local communities you'd need for that, you probably wouldn't have bought a Steam Deck in the first place.
  19. Sigh deeply. Go back home. Take the Deck. Start Hades.
  20. ♥♥♥♥, the overlay is back on.
