Controls stopped working
Like the title says, i was just playing around like usual when all controls except for the touchscreen, power button, and volume rockers stopped working.

I googled it and it said to try updating my steam client, which i couldn't do as the steam button wasn't working. Then i remembers desktop mode and tried searching for an update that way, i navigated with the touch screen. No dice, there wasn't an update.

I tried doing a soft reboot, ie holding the power button for 3 secs to restart the device. Controls still didn't work.

Then i did a hard reboot, IE held the button for 10 secs until it power downed fullly.

Controls were back, for a bit. Now they're intermittent and there's this weird beeping sound from the device that sounds like something is getting connected and disconnected. Kind of like a bluetooth pairing sounds except quieter.

I went to the controller part of the settings and waited for it to act up again, and sure enough when those sounds happen all my controller settings disappear, like there's nothing connected or attached to the device at all.

Any ideas what's causing this? Faulty wiring? BIOS issues?

Any help would be appreciated.

do you hear the controller booting up sound just like when you start the deck?
LittleShoes Aug 29, 2023 @ 4:33am
Yeah, there's this beep and it doesn't seem to come from the speakers but rather the controller itself

yeah that's the controller startup sound that is made by the haptics. it either means that the controller has crashed or perhaps something is not making a proper contact inside the deck.

the controller in the deck is simply an internal USB device.

I didn't have much installed so I did a factory reset, to see if that would fix it. So far so good.. so probably not a hardware issue

hopefully. I had my controller crash once as well but it simply rebooted after a second and I regained controls.

Ok...this is weird. I think I made a breakthrough.

First off, the factory reset didn't fix anything.

But my controls do work... so long as I'm not charging the device.

I unplugged it to troubleshoot and factory reset it and it worked perfectly.

Then I decided to plug it back in cause I like having full battery, lo and behold, controls cut out intermittently again.

So I had a eureka moment and unplugged it, it's working again. No issues.

Except for the fact I can't charge and play..

Contact steam support and ask for an RMA support ticket and get it fixed.... Also before then try another power supply just to be sure it's not your steam deck.. If it's your charger you can buy another one and not go thru a bunch of hoops to get it fixed...

Steam OS requires the steam client to be open. The steam client act as a filter to translate controller input for applications. This design is awkward because the device cannot live without the steam client at the moment. Go to desktop mode and open the steam client next time.

Have this issue in Desktop mode as well. VERY frustrating.

Anything come of this? I’m having the same issue. If I go into desktop mode and then return to gaming mode from the desktop mode then the controller starts working again. But that’s the only way to get it going.

Do I have to RMA!?
I have the Same issue with my conpletely new device…is there already any solution to this?
