Steam Deck

Dock + Remote Play stuttering
One of the main reasons of getting the official dock for me is to be able to stream from my gaming pc to my 4K tv. However, it has been a bit of a struggle to get this to work properly.

The default value of the Resolution Limit in the Remote Play settings is set to “Display resolution”. This seems perfect, but surprisingly this still uses 1080p when connected to my 4K tv via the Dock. Setting this to 4K manually is however an easy workaround.

But the other issue I’m running into is more annoying. Almost (but not every) time a game is opened via streaming the video has a very consistent stutter. Like the game is played at 15FPS. To fix the stutter, I have to change the resolution away from 4K and back to 4K again. After this everything runs very smoothly. But it’s very annoying to have to do this every time I stream a game. The resolution can be changed via the game setting, but changing the resolution via the Steam Deck’s Display Resolution (in Remote Play settings) also works.

It feels so close to my perfect setup. Does anybody have any tips I can try to fix this? I’ll also gladly post diagnostics like the streaming performance graph if that would help.

So far I tried:
- Forcing the Steam Deck resolution to be 4K instead of Auto in Display settings.
- Disabling the FPS limit of the Deck.
- Enforcing an FPS limit of 60fps.
- Tweaking the bandwidth limit.
All don’t make a difference.

My host has NVFBC disabled, and hardware encoding enabled.

I’ve had the same issue. Did you find a solution?

Switching to Desktop Mode and then streaming the game on my Deck fixed it for me. The streaming experience while in Desktop Mode is so much smoother.

I know this is old, but for others having this problem: The strange dip to super low frame rates only on the deck or docked television(but the host PC monitor shows the game running just fine) can be quickly fixed by bringing up the right hand steam overlay menu. This is where you can change brightness and per game settings. Swap the toggle That makes settings impact only this game or all games and then pop it back. So turn it on and turn it off or turn it off and turn it on, whichever you prefer, but the simple toggle will reset the frame rate.

One of the issues, and you can see it if you turn the FPS overlay on, is that for some reason the steam deck tries to run an uncapped frame rate and you will have thousands of FPS and it's too much for the steam deck hardware. It slows the machine to a crawl And it just needs a quick reminder what FPS to use.
