Sleep does not turn off screen
Since a few weeks (maybe even since a month) I can't put my steam deck to sleep. When I put my SD to sleep, the screen just turns black but is still litted, I can even access menus clicking the steam button and they will show up. It is a pain as I have to turn it off when I have something to do instead of just putting it to sleep.

I'm on the stable channel, and I can't remember if this appeared after an update or not, sadly.

I tried to find someone with a similar problem but I couldn't, only saw something similar on desktop mode, but this is happening to me on steamOS, not on the desktop mode.

If this has been going on for maybe a month there's probably a bigger issue going on. If possible I would try to move all of your games over to an SD card and factory resetting. I don't see this issue widely reported so I couldn't be sure that waiting for an update would fix this.

I'm also assuming you've completely powered the Deck down and had the same issue after powering back on?

Yeah I tried everything, even clearing cache on restart and trying to connect and disconnect a external monitor in desktop mode (I think someone reported that it was a possible fix) but nothing works.

Thank you tough, I don't want to clear everything as I code on the deck and I don't want to install again all the things I need, but maybe in some weeks when I finish a program I'll have to do a factory reset :steamsad:

Im having the same issue. I've tried factory resetting and it worked but had to do it again after installing a new SSD with the problem reappearing. Now it keeps happening even after multiple resets

You tried the latest update? I just tried to lock the deck (I was so used to turn it off that I forgot that could be done) and it indeed went to sleep just right. I don't know if it was the latest update, or if it has something to do with the desktop mode...

This issue started when I used desktop mode with another screen wired to the deck, and I'm not sure if it stopped happening the same way, do you usually use desktop mode? Well, it doesn't "Started" this way, but is one of my suppositions.

Sorry for not being able to be more helpful, it is difficult to pin the problem :(

It started doing this for me today too for no apparant reason only thaz it decides to turn on after a minute aswell, and i dont even have the steam deck that long. Would love to know if there is a fix.

I had a similar issue. What "fixed" it for me was just letting the steam deck sit around powered on for a couple of minutes.

It is most likely doing sd card trim in the background. It won't go to sleep while this is going on. So wait for it to finish. The system should notify user about this in order to avoid all this.

Same happening for me a lot recently. This is new. I'm on latest main-beta branch, and it's happened multiple times. Just like DeathGrim I would go to power-shutdown and the backlight would still be on. On one occasion it stayed on for a good hour or two while i left the house, thankfully it wasn't in the case to overheat or anything. Holding in the power button for 5-10 seconds fully turns off the backlight on the screen.
Only started happening in recent week or two.
My guess is that the latest OS changes means that the power-shutdown is missing a hardware step to turn off backlight and steam aren't aware of it.

I have photos of it in a darkened room if it helps a dev.

Same thing is happening to me as well. Started after removing my deck from an external monitor as well as being on main beta. This seems to be a bug, and I hope that Steam sees this thread because it's apparently an issue for many people right now.

You most likely figured this out by now. But to anyone who hasn't. All I did go fix it was enable lock screen. (You don't need to leave it enabled if you don't want.) Simply enable it. Push the power button to put it to sleep. Then the back light will shut off. You can disable lock screen afterwards if you want to.

Having the exact same issue. Sleep mode now inoperable — steam interface crashes on waking up. Huge pain in the ass, overall user experience is completely ruined.

Lock screen trick didn't help. Will try factory settings re-install soon.

Did you managed to fix it with a re-install?

I found a fix. I had to power the device off by holding the power button for 5-10 seconds switched the desktop mode let it sit for about 1 minute or 2 then pressed the power button quickly went right to sleep. Switched back to game mode and it was still working. I also turned off remote play not sure if that helped at all.

Additional update. If you go to >settings>system> scroll all the way to the bottom if your deck is trimming it also will not go to sleep mode. Same goes for if you are downloading a steam game.
