you can disable it but every OS update will wipe your installed packages anyways

oh no I don't want to do this. It's too bad

Yeah ran into the same issue... but if your installed packages get wiped during an update, doesn't that kinda kill the whole concept of using it as a regular daily driver desktop as well as for gaming? That was one of the big reasons I got this thing.

yes it does. SteamOS is not really suitable for actual work.

It doesn't kill the concept, just makes it slightly annoying. I'm using the deck as a laptop replacement and I've been able to get around fine with just flatpaks for the past two weeks.

The only change I've made so far that required enabling write to the filesystem was editing the host file so I can ssh to my home server with just a hostname.

There's also plenty of ways to restore changes after an update, but it does get a bit advanced.

the ultimate way to use the deck as a computer is to install a different Linux distribution. Then it gets easy. But then you lose a lot of cool deck features...

I found a command and can use it sudo steamos-readonly disable

Flatpaks don't get wiped as they're installed to the user folder (like your games are), and the preferred method of installing extra software is via flatpak, usually from the Discovery app.

btw using this command bugs out gaming mode. I had to reinstall Steam OS to fix this.

bro... it was basically the reason why I bought the steam deck :( I was using Windows and I love PCs for the fact that you can do anything on it. I kept learning and learning about the steam deck, and... for the love of god! everytime I do a tweak, the updates deletes it. I gave Linux a shot, but no more. that was soo disappointing
