All Controller Inputs Freeze During Gameplay
While playing FFXI on deck, docked to an external display and using an external controller (8bitdo sn30 and dual sense controllers), occasionally the entire controller input subsystem will lock up and stop sending inputs to both games and the entire OS as a whole. To solve this, I have to force shutdown the system via the power button and reboot at which point the built-in controller starts working again, but my external controllers will not register inputs (they connect via Bluetooth but do not show as a 2nd controller in the controller settings menu). To solve this, I have to remove all controllers from the paired Bluetooth devices menu and re-add them.

I did discover that the problem stems from loss of communication with an external device. Say, I use a bluetooth controller and it goes to sleep for power saving due to inactivity. When I reconnect the device, the external devices subsystem can no longer display any input devices or convey their inputs to a game. Additionally, the controller mapping system switches input device templates to show the OG steam controller for some reason. After closing the game, the inbuilt controls are able to begin functioning again, sometimes requiring cycling in and out of sleep mode, but no external controller will work until a complete reboot.

The only solution I've found for this is using an 8bitdo wireless usb adapter. The adapter itself gets detected as a controller, so even when your controller paired to the adapter goes to sleep, the "controller" remains active as the adapter is still plugged in. This however does not allow a graceful undock as once undocked, the adapter is disconnected causing the external devices system to get borked once again. That being the case, I cannot find a way at present to prevent this issue altogether. Seems the only option is to simply close your game before undocking so that once you reboot the game in handheld mode, the inbuilt controls take over as primary input.

I've been having the same issue myself, except usually only on emulation and Steam Link. I wonder if there will be a fix down the line, but regardless of that, nothing's changing for awhile by the sounds of things. Perhaps hopefully there will be a fix for this software issue, but for now, we'll have to deal with the problem just happening by the sounds of things. Crossing my fingers for Valve.
