Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Wifi and ethernet internet now broken and slow in desktop mode after 3.3 update
As the title says, my wifi and ethernet internet on the steam deck has gone on the fritz after updating to 3.3 in both 5ghz and 2.4ghz in desktop mode. In game mode, I can download games at full speed without issue but can't play multiplayer games. In desktop mode, I can't get a webpage to load, and the discover store won't download apps or updates unless I wait 5+ minutes.

I've done a factory reset to both my router and my steam deck, same issue. I've turned on and off the wifi power management in the developer settings. I had zero issues until 3.3, which mentions that the wifi driver was updated.

EDIT: What fixed it for me was reserving a static IP on my router and then setting my steam deck to that static IP. I haven't messed with the DNS settings.

EDIT Sept 2022: I've had this problem creep up again and the only solution that fixes it is changing my primary and secondary DNS on my steamdeck wifi settings to 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9

Also, I can't play multiplayer games in game mode. All my other devices in my home have no problem with connecting and using the internet at full speeds. What's doubly odd is that if I do a speed test in a browser on my steam deck I get full speeds but loading pages (including getting to speedtest.net itself), downloading updates, and really doing anything involving the internet in desktop mode is broken or takes 5-10 minutes to move at all.

having the same issues here, internet is super slow or spotty on just the SteamDeck, regardless of wired via a Dock or Wifi, even connected to my phone's hotspot.

This also happens after I did a Factory Reset to see if it was just something I messed up. Nope, even after a Factory Reset, the networking issue persists

Glad I'm not crazy, exact same issue. Steam seems to be the only application able to reach full speed.
Looks like the issue is related to DNS.

I added the Quad9 DNS address to my connection's IPv4 properties : 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112

And now all of my browsers are working correctly. I went ahead and set up my router to also use those IP addresses, and at least for now, everything seems fine

My updates are taking HOURS. So you’re not the only one

Same here, minecraft is where I noticed it. It's not DNS related as I'm using an ip address for the server on the lan.

For the people that are currently facing this issue, it would be interesting to see what's the output of `systemd-resolve --status`

If a website is taking a while to load for you consistently, could you run the following command and send us the output:
strace -ft curl <url> # e.g. strace -ft curl google.com
i'm having exactly this same problem.

only had my SD about a week; never got around to trying desktop mode until after 3.03 update, therefore never got a chance to test in previous build.

ok so after many wasted hours, i've never ONCE succeeded at pulling up a proper web page w firefox (or brave). but, the Steam gaming mode works - i think - tho watching help on YouTube everyone else's SD clearly runs way faster than mine (i have the 512gb) i.e. every task in gaming mode = dial up internet circa 2000's on the pos windows XP thicc chonk 4x3 CRT

granted, games play fine once they're running - just the time it takes no way seems appropriate in 2022, let alone my iPhone 3Gs circa 2009

excessive verbose cringe aside: after many failed attempts in desktop mode, giving up on Heroic/my Epic/GOG library or EmuDeck, my war of attrition for the fun Linux tweaking was lost. after some copium that gaming mode was good enough, a few days of clunky, slow, and cumbersome loading times/screens commenced, where i often just resorted to streaming remote play from my PC since i never leave my room anyway (remote play works great btw).

then tonight happened: attempting Jedi Fallen Order on the deck; u already know where this is going: the Origin Games Launcher.

like some 50 shades ♥♥♥♥ i'm back in desktop mode for more PAIN to install that: déjà vu Epic/GOG etc the web page (Firefox or Brave) doesnt load; only spinny wheel of death. strangely, the google search page loads normally, allowing me to search for the link, producing a typical page of search results - fairly quickly, i might ad, albeit still slow. checking the ul/dl speeds of my wifi connection while spinny wheel on the Deck - its freaking CRAWLING at pre-.com bubble pre-Cambrian dial up speed in my high school library - i'm not talking kbps - no, bro - i'm talking bps. as in freaking byte(s?)-sans-kilo per second (on wifi/ethernet which otherwise blazes on multiple high-use desktop machines (gaming PC, iMac, as well as handful of iphones and smart TV's, often simultaneously - point being, no other device of any kind despite heavy traffic ever has issues in this regard.

at this point i owe you a huge apology if you made it this far into my whiny cringe-barf - irritated af as i am atm, this was all just catharsis w no concern for the time you wasted witnessing my meltdown

...now (before anyone asks me to) i'll actually read this thread for the (hopefully) likely solution already posted here. and if it makes u feel any better, i cant get this time back either - we're in this ♥♥♥♥ together now dog

PS grim Steam Deck experience aside, i'll still go on record that i freaking love this thing - but w most of my adult life living with various now ex-gf's is prob evidence i'm a glutton for punishment....but my new SD talks A LOT less than my any of ex's ever did, so glass half full for sure

UPDATE: (save your brain dont read my last post): shoutout to @rob -this worked for me: added Quad9's DNS (in Steam Deck settings) to my connection's IPv4 properties, as well as my router. web pages loading like lightning now

Seconded, but this is definitely a bug. Glad it’s got some traction.
I’m still running into the issue of wifi networks periodically being forgotten or no longer connecting, resulting in needing to forget the network and re enter credentials and DNS information.

Also dealing with this on my girlfriend's deck. She said it may have started before she updated to 3.3, but I can't verify that. I can verify that it seems like anything Flatpak may not be able to reach the web correctly. Edge loads ibm.com pretty quickly, but the firefox Flatpak took over 3-4 minutes to load just the text. XIV Launcher, which is also a flatpak I believe, never loads the news and can't reach the login server. This started happening about a week ago.

EDIT:
I added the IP address manually with 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9 as my DNS. Now I am able to get stuff to come up. Whatever the Deck was doing automatically with the wifi connection was not working correctly. I can confirm that my other deck that works was set up automatically.
