4k TV/Monitor - Resolution/Hz Issue
I am using a USB-C hub that only supports 4k 30hz over HDMI. To my knowledge, there is no way to change the resolution and hertz to 1080p 60hz (outside of desktop mode). Changing the game resolution in properties or even the resolution in a game's graphics option does not fix this issue. The output remains at 4k. This means that all games in the Steam Deck UI are stuck at 30hz when using an external 4k display.

I would really appreciate an option to change the resolution in the Steam Deck UI. It would be preferable to purchasing a brand new USB hub that is compatible with 4k 60hz (that I have no intention of fully utilizing) or switching to a lower resolution display.

Thank you.

Not being able to set the resolution in game mode is a huge oversight.

When I connect it to my television it outputs at 4095x2160. When I play a game it gives me black bars on the side of the image with no way to make the bars go away.

Please allow us to manually set the resolution for game mode.

having a similar issue with usb-c to hdmi but for my capture card, if i even try to open a game the window gets real glitchy visually, and the hdmi will stop working.

I did manage to get OS-steam view with clear sound.

EDIT:
Tested Desktop view, it also froze for the capture card

Same issue here wirh a 4k TV, it’s really frustrating also because navigating the Steam UI feels very slow and laggy. I hope they let us change the output resolution in the future.

I found a simple solution, and it works!!!
In desktop mode, type these 3 lines on the command line:

sudo steamos-readonly disable
sudo sed -i 's/-w 1280 -h 800/-W 1920 -H 1080/g' /usr/bin/gamescope-session
sudo steamos-readonly enable

Fixed!!!

You can also run a script for doing this. Create a text file named "fix_hdmi.sh" with the 3 lines above.

To run the script type:
sh fix_hdmi.sh [ENTER]

sh f [TAB] [ENTER]
also works.

(or, for the Linux savvy people, just edit the gamescope-session file yourselves)

Now I can run Dirt Rally 2 on my 4k OLED with awesome picture quality and a solid 60fps.
Steam Deck HDMI output at 1080p.
LG 55BX OLED doing upscaling and sharpening.
Hard to tell from real 4k.
