Same. Just got the Deck today. Changing volume with buttons or in settings indicates volume change (up or down) with no noticeable change, even when at 0%, sound is still audible at the same default level it came out of the box with.

Go into desktop mode, click extend volume range, set Echo cancel sink to 150% then *select* volume and set that to 100% (note you can select multiple sliders, select volume only).

There's no need to set the echo-cancel-sink to 150%. Instead make sure that it isn't disabled, and is set to 100%, set the speakers also to 100% and then switch back to game mode and the volume control should behave appropriately. We are actively looking into this issue.

It is also worth noting that sometimes we have seen instances of the volume controls not working when there is a 100% cpu load which we are also looking at.

Not sure at what point this started to happen but when I power on my Steam Deck in Steam OS mode volume increases to max 100 and I cannot lower it. If I try to lower the volume it will just keep going back to 100. If I switch to Desktop mode, I can lower the volume but then I have the opposite problem where I cannot increase the volume! This is extremely frustrating especially since my Deck is relatively new and only had for a couple of months now. Has there been not update to fix this issue?

Might not be the same issue, but I resolved my issue recently. If you right click the volume icon in the taskbar, click on "Configure Audio Volume". At the general page you will see "Volume Step". For some reason mine was set to 100%, making the volume buttons jump from mute to 100% on press. Set it to something like 10% will restore normal behavior.

Hope this helps someone having the same issue.

You posted this in August and it still hasn’t been fixed…

When this happens, you can often solve it by opening PulseAudio Volume Control and clicking the volume bar you want the buttons to change.
This app can be added as a non-Steam game to access it in Game Mode, but you'll want to have maximised the window in Desktop Mode before.

So my steam deck has been having the same issue; the thing is, I left it with my brother and had to travel to another place. It was then brought back to me, and the decreasing volume button was either stuck or not working. Whenever I turn it on, the volume goes entirely back or mutes the steam deck. I restart the steam deck, and it lets me increase its volume for a while, but during that time, the decreasing volume button doesn't work. So after a couple of hours of playing, my steam deck again mutes itself. So the gist of it is, the decreasing volume button is broken but still malfunctions behind the scenes. I don't know what to do; my brother says he didn't even play it, he's 12, and I know he didn't, but I want to know how to fix it, it's annoying, and it broke my heart to see the steam deck like that.

Does anybody know where to buy a new audio board for the steam deck? I've searched through various places, ifixit has parts but nothing for the volume control boards.

My issue is similar but my volume down button is inoperable and my volume up button doesn't change the volume to go any higher when it decides to turn the volume down to mute. Tried searching through the settings in desktop mode and steam game mode and can't even disable button controls to allow only volume controle from the slide out menu.

Just wanna fix it to at least be able to use sound or Bluetooth headphones. It's always shutting my sound off completely when the system heats up.

I've looked everywhere and found no solution to this, in my case the volume keeps going up as if i were holding the button down. It continues to do this randomly even in desktop mode. It recently became worse as the icon would not leave the screen both on desktop and gaming mode, hopefully steam acknowledges this issue and patches it.

Bro I think you should report this to steam they offered me to send it back to them, they’ll fix it and then send it back. I’ll do it later like I’ve had it planned for a while, so just tell them and they will assist you don’t worry.

Go to desktop mode
System settings
Shortcuts
In the window you will see a category that says applications, and under that a category that says system settings
Under system settings is “audio volume”
You can unselect the shortcut for volume up or down, and add a new custom shortcut
Even though the steam deck is still hammering away on the volume up / down button, nothing is happening.

Thank god cuz I was ready to throw my steam deck at the wall

I've tried this. And even after making sure I apply changes and such. When I go back to gaming mode. The shortcuts are enabled again.

If I go back to desktop mode the buttons are still disabled. But it seems like it doesn't carry over to gaming mode.
