Steam Deck Screen Orientation Bug
I used the deck with an external monitor and changed settings in display under system settings. I disabled the deck's monitor so that I could use my external monitor as the primary one instead of it being an extension of the deck's screen. When I reenabled the steam deck's display, the orientation was bugged out and couldnt get it to properly align in the normal orientation. I had to change it to 90 degrees counter clockwise to get it to work properly. However, ever since doing this, loading to and from desktop mode, the orientation is briefly in portrait mode instead of landscape. Even when putting the deck to sleep, the steam deck symbol is shown in the incorrect orientation. Does anyone else have this issue? Is this a known bug that Valve is working on fixing? I've seen some other youtubers with this issue as well. It bugged me enough to re-image the system but even that didn't fix it!

It's not a bug. The internal display is actually 800x1280, a portrait display. By default the system rotates it so that it's in landscape format to match the physical orientation of the screen. When switching modes the display briefly appears in its native orientation before any of the options are loaded. Additionally the Deck logo is actually sideways on purpose when going to sleep as it's supposed to look like an eye blinking and then closing.

It is a bug because the orientation is set to landscape yet the display is in 90 degrees counterclockwise portrait mode. The setting and what's displayed do not match. There are reddit and steam threads dating back 7 months; I would like to see a genuine solution to this issue.

I have never plugged mine in an external monitor and when I switched to desktop mode the other day the desktop was rendered sideways, counter clock wise. It did not take the full height of the portrait mode and instead had a 800x640 resolution that was unusable.

I'm on Stable. OS Version 3.4.4. OS build 20221228.1

People have to stop spreading this false information that the monitor is a "portrait display" and that its normal resolution is 800x1280. Just go to the Steam Deck site and the specs say that it's 1280x800. I'm pretty sure the resolution was 1280x800 in landscape orientation before that bug.

Even if that were the case, screen orientation is controlled by software, not the hardware. The screen orientation in the Display Configuration should be made to match the orientation that the display is actually in from a user point of view.

Straight up truth right there.

This started out of nowhere today when I switched over to desktop mode for the first time since connecting to a new external display. My first reaction was, "Oh that's dumb, better download this update and see if that fixes it..." Nope.

We need a solution to this known and ongoing bug. The Steam Deck does not, should not, and never did (at first) display in portrait mode by default. There is zero reason why the handheld's default display in desktop (or any other mode) should be 10:16 instead of 16:10. This sentiment obviously extends other resolution values/interpretations whether by ratio or direct pixel count such as 4:3 vs 800x600 as well. It's a landscape display, so the larger number should always be on the left side by default. As if it needs saying, again, as was mentioned above; Valve advertises it as such.

So, NO, we should not need to blindly accept that the only fix is to flip our primary unit display 90 degrees counter clockwise in order to correctly view our desktop not to mention correctly orient the cursor.

Once more, have a look at the deck screen. It is plainly a landscape display, not a portrait. It's not a cell phone, it's a handheld computer running on a Linux KDE OS with a 7" Landscape display.

These replies telling people that we're wrong for expecting our system to function correctly are really getting old and I consider them toxic as they only serve to inflame the issue as opposed to resolving it.

Valve, please fix this.

The site is going to say that because the enduser isn’t going to care that it’s a portait screen on its side.
800x1280 on its side is 1280x800.
Doesn’t change the fact that internally the screen is a portrait screen. It’s not an upright landscape screen. Idk why you gotta be so bitter about it.

Here’s me using my steam deck running windows in portait mode reading these comments. Oops.

Err... The screen orientation is handled in the kernel. Valve should take the less harm approach until the orientation workaround is seamless such that there isn't a difference between natural 16:10 vs workaround 16:10

Do not rush the process. You will screw everyone over including yourself and the OP.

What dock do you use for your monitor?
