Same issue here after resuming from sleep. Have to disconnect dock power and reconnect to get external device audio working again.

I seem to have fixed my issue, when in desktop mode clicking on the speaker icon it did not show an HDMI audio option. But when I go into the main audio settings for desktop mode and scroll to the bottom, it seemed to be disabled by default. You have the option of stereo, 5.1 and 7.1. I put it to stereo, made it my default device then booted back into steam os and change the audio device to external. Works good now

Worked for me but only geting center, left and right channel not rear for 5.1

Did what Pistol recommended and it works, 5.1 surround sound now 👍👍

This works BUT you need to have the SteamDeck docked when you change the settings in desktop mode or it won't detect the HDMI settings for the Rembrandt Pro Audio Device.

Also, beware if you are using ARC pass through or have your dock connected to the same HDMI port that uses ARC passthrough on your TV (you can see it usually in parentheses next to the label ex. HDMI 2 (ARC). Mine would not output sound when connected to that HDMI port even with all the correct settings, I had to switch it to HDMI 3.

Hope this helps!

ARC works for me, with Pistol's method

Same problem here. Both my Steam Deck and my Partner's are having this problem. We discovered it when trying to use wired headphones with their Deck. The headphones wouldn't work with mine or theirs, no audio. Then, when I plugged my Steam Deck into its dock, the audio wouldn't go to my TV, it just kept playing out of the Steam Deck's built-in speakers. Previously, it would successfully send audio to my TV, so I don't know what happened. It seems to be a software bug with the Deck for sure.

Something that might be relevant to what's causing the bug - In the Steam Deck's audio settings, the default setting is "auto." You can also manually select "Speakers" (the built-in ones) or "External Device" (the peripheral you're trying to output audio to).

When "External Device" is selected while trying to use wired headphones or HDMI output to TV, after adjusting the volume slider, "External Device" changes to "Select a Value." The reference to the device seems to be broken. Hopefully that helps Valve find a solution ASAP, I'm disappointed that this is still a problem people are having years later.

UPDATE: I FIXED IT. HERE'S HOW:
This trick only worked when I had my Steam Deck docked to my TV, not with headphones plugged in. If you don't have a dock or a means of plugging your Deck into a TV, I'm sorry, I don't know how to fix this for wired headphones otherwise.

1.) Boot into Desktop mode while undocked
2.) Connect dock to Steam deck, plug in HDMI if you haven't already.
3.) Right-click the audio symbol in the bottom right and click "Configure Audio Devices"
4.) Scroll down and there should be a section called "Inactive Cards," mine says "Rembrandt Radeon High Definition Audio Controller" and the "Profile" is set to "Off."
5.) Change the profile of this card to "Digital Stereo () Output" where the () should contain the HDMI number on your TV. For example, my Dock is hooked into HDMI 3, so for me, it looks like: "Digital Stereo (HDMI 3) Output
6.) With the audio card enabled, scroll back up to "Playback Devices" and select it. For me, it says "HDMI / DisplayPort 3 (Rembrant High Definition Audio Controller)
7.) Done, audio should now work while docked and if you plug in wired headphones.

I hope this helps someone struggling to get this to work!

This fixed my issue. How is this still a thing years later? Can’t Valve recognize when this setting is wrong and fix it in a FW update?

I have a ‘clean’ Deck, no mods or hacks - Official Dock, not using Beta firmware etc. and my HDMI audio was broken.

At least give us the same settings in game mode so we can resolve the issue without using Desktop mode.

Tried it and it doesn't work for me. I've been messing with this for over an hour now and thought this might work because it was all exactly as described. Buuut nope. It's absolutely unacceptable that this issue still exists years later when people have been reporting it the entire time.

It's still not working for me. I've tried both HDMI and DisplayPort. Official Dock isn't outputting any sound to any monitor or cable. The only thing I can do would be factory reset.
