External display (Nreal Air) limited to 30hz in gaming mode

I have the Nreal Air glasses which I connect to the Steam Deck via USB-C. They display games at 60hz in desktop mode, but in gaming mode they are always limited to 30hz, regardless of any settings I change (vsync, frame rate limit, refresh rate setting, etc.)

Apparently what's happening (based on what I've seen in other topics) is that while desktop mode will let you pick any supported display mode, gaming mode will only use the "first" display mode that your display reports. In your case, it's probably some 30Hz mode. Until Valve actually lets us pick what display mode to use, there's not much you can do about it. There are plenty of people complaining that the Deck keeps trying to run at 4K, even though it struggles to play whatever game they're trying to play at that resolution. Hopefully Valve will get a resolution switch added to game mode.

I found a simple solution, and it works!!! (and I ordered and NReal Air)
In desktop mode, type these 3 lines on the command line:

sudo steamos-readonly disable
sudo sed -i 's/-w 1280 -h 800/-W 1920 -H 1080/g' /usr/bin/gamescope-session
sudo steamos-readonly enable

Fixed!!!

You can also run a script for doing this. Create a text file named "fix_hdmi.sh" with the 3 lines above.

To run the script type:
sh fix_hdmi.sh [ENTER]

sh f [TAB] [ENTER]
also works.

(or, for the Linux savvy people, just edit the gamescope-session file yourselves)


Now I can run Dirt Rally 2 on my 4k OLED with awesome picture quality and a solid 60fps.
Steam Deck HDMI output at 1080p.
LG 55BX OLED doing upscaling and sharpening.
Hard to tell from real 4k.

This is good, but can we get a proper fix? Don't feel comfy editing my deck...

This is now resolved in the latest Nreal air firmware update. Tested today 12/11/22. All games now run at whatever refresh/framerate you set as it should do not half the framerate as before.

Anybody find a USBc hub which can support nreal air while charging? Bonus if I can use the steam dock for kb/m, Ethernet etc
