Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Steamdeck doesn't work with my home wifi but works with every other wifi I tested
Hi,

Something about my router, the Netgear AC2600 is causing my steamdeck to drop and timeout from the wifi. I've tried pretty much everything I had access to in the router's admin page: toggling WMM, toggling Beamforming, toggling MU-MIMMO, toggling airtime fairness, changing the channels and changing the rates.

On the SD I tried disabling wifi power management and it did not change anything.
It works fine with my phone's hotspot or the wifi at work. This issue is just with my home network. I have a feeling it might be driver related.

It just doesn't play nice with my wifi. I'm considering re-imaging my SD to see if that will help. Did anyone have the same issue and attempt re-imaging?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I had the same problem. The solution is to enable IPv6 on Netgear router and Steam Deck.

On Netgear router settings go to ADVANCED => Advanced Setup => IPv6 and set Internet Connection Type to Auto Detect.

On Steam Deck go to Desktop Mode => System Settings => Network => Connections, choose right Wi-Fi connection, go to IPv6 bookmark and set Method to Automatic

Then restart both devices...it takes some time for the settings to take effect. It worked for me ;-)

Tried this and worked for a bit but stopped after an hour.

It's a problem with the steamdeck drivers not playing nice with netgear hardware. And since it affects such a low segment of users valve developers refuse to actually look into fixing their trash drivers.
So you have two options, get a router that is not netgear or put up with the constant disconnects.

Edit: Third option is to return the steam deck.

Would installing OpenWRT on a Netgear router potentially fix it?

It would potentially open up some settings that could help you fix it.

That's if your router supports OpenWRT. I was going to attempt that too but mine doesn't support it.
Currently been having this issue myself. What really sucks is I bought it for my gf for Christmas. I work in I.T myself. So I have tried a multitude of different things. If I was writing notes in a ticket I could give exactly what I've tried. Lol I actually opened a ticket awhile back with steam support. (I should probably check on that) but if anyone finds a solution. Let me know lol some things I've tried.

-disabling wifi power saver settings in the developer options

-enabling ipv6 routing on router and steam deck.

-factory resetting my Netgear router

-tried editing and enabling different things in the network manager folder in Linux through console. Can't recall exactly what I tried.

-tried running a command to install network tools in Linux. Which didn't work, and can't remember exactly what it said for the error. But, pretty sure it was something along the lines of, steam could not download specific tool or something. Basically this was an attempt to try to basically ping my gateway from the steam deck. Or basically run ipconfig. But in Linux, as I'm not Linux savvy, didn't work.

- re-imaged the steam deck. With this one. I used Rufus to make bootable media, used a USB flash drive to try and re-image the deck. I made 3 separate bootable flash drives. 2 we're 8 gbs, and one was 16. I tried each one multiple times before it would eventually allow me to get to the Linux desktop, and click the re-image desktop icon to begin the process.

---Since re-image steamdeck will sometimes stay connected for awhile. Actually most of the time. It stays connected long enough to actual download games which was a marked improvement.

Before could barely get a 2 gb game to install with it constantly losing connection on my home network. Now I've tested it with multiple games, and actually have gotten them to install. But, still having connection issues. Connection issues seem intermittent. When I initially turn on the steam deck. It does not have connection for a few minutes. Then after several minutes go by. Connection is established. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes a restart fixes the issue.

I have some several hours. Trying to make this work on my router. I have spent a lot of time on this. Lol I'm just happy now. It at least stays connected long enough to the point where it will at least download some games.
Although. It still has connection issues

There was another person in this post that solved the issue by switching to an Asus router. I'd recommend just getting rid of the netgear router.

I haven't tried to run discord or sea of thieves in a while on the SD but I was on a trip abroad for Christmas and everything on the SD seemed to work fine.

I'd also recommend updating the SD if you haven't already.
Yeah Ive got the same issue with my netgear router. I can download games perfectly fine but Firefox in game mode will never load

There is a well known issue with Netgear Nighthawk routers dropping connections and other problems. I had two of those routers a while back with the router dropping connections, slow internet wired and wireless. Had a friend who had the same problems.

There are many post all over the internet about the Nighthawk routers being bad. Unfortunately it’s a hardware issue that can’t be fixed. It’s best to buy a different router other than Netgear.
Yeah I'm joining the chorus here to say it doesn't work for me outside of Steam and that really makes using this thing rough! I download like 3Mbs a second and it keeps timing out. Every time I reconnect it downloads a little bit more.
Wow can't believe this is still an issue more than 6 months later. Good job Valve! Great way to show you care about your customers.
Have pretty similar problem. Everything works fine on steam games/library downloads, but constantly disconnects if i try and play non steam stuff (eg, Diable 2 Resurrected). Using a Telstra smart modem in Australia (Arcadyan). My solution is to connect to a tp-link wifi extender then it works fine. Interestingly, I have 2 tp-link extenders, it connects fine to one, but won't connect to the other.
And this ♥♥♥♥ still broken all this time after release. Amazing!

You guys at valve see this?

Good job taking care of your customers. I will not forget this next time you guys release some of your ♥♥♥♥ hardware.

If you are experiencing connection issues outside steam, it would be good to know if disabling dns caching fixes the problem for you.

To do so, you can move the file /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/dns.conf to a different folder and reboot. E.g. in a console run:
sudo mv /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/dns.conf ~/dns.conf

To re-enable dns caching:
sudo mv ~/dns.conf /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/dns.conf

If this fixes the problem for you I will probably have some follow-up questions for you.

It's not Valve, it's Netgear. The issue isn't limited to Steam Deck, it also affects consoles, tablets, phones, you name it, but mostly gaming devices. Which is ironic being that it's most common in Night Hawk models which are sold as gaming routers.

I've been trying to figure out an issue with my Netgear and the Steam Deck for months and literally EVERY thread I find on ANY forum including the Netgear official ones, the only time anyone ever finds a solution is they buy a different router.

The recommended brands to switch to are Asus or D-Link.

While I am inclined to agree with you and I might make the change eventually... No other device on my network has caused this sort of issue for me. Eitherway I don't use the steamdeck at home that much so not a big deal.
