On Netgear router settings go to ADVANCED => Advanced Setup => IPv6 and set Internet Connection Type to Auto Detect.
On Steam Deck go to Desktop Mode => System Settings => Network => Connections, choose right Wi-Fi connection, go to IPv6 bookmark and set Method to Automatic
Then restart both devices...it takes some time for the settings to take effect. It worked for me ;-)
Tried this and worked for a bit but stopped after an hour.
Would installing OpenWRT on a Netgear router potentially fix it?
It would potentially open up some settings that could help you fix it.
That's if your router supports OpenWRT. I was going to attempt that too but mine doesn't support it.
-disabling wifi power saver settings in the developer options
-enabling ipv6 routing on router and steam deck.
-factory resetting my Netgear router
-tried editing and enabling different things in the network manager folder in Linux through console. Can't recall exactly what I tried.
-tried running a command to install network tools in Linux. Which didn't work, and can't remember exactly what it said for the error. But, pretty sure it was something along the lines of, steam could not download specific tool or something. Basically this was an attempt to try to basically ping my gateway from the steam deck. Or basically run ipconfig. But in Linux, as I'm not Linux savvy, didn't work.
- re-imaged the steam deck. With this one. I used Rufus to make bootable media, used a USB flash drive to try and re-image the deck. I made 3 separate bootable flash drives. 2 we're 8 gbs, and one was 16. I tried each one multiple times before it would eventually allow me to get to the Linux desktop, and click the re-image desktop icon to begin the process.
---Since re-image steamdeck will sometimes stay connected for awhile. Actually most of the time. It stays connected long enough to actual download games which was a marked improvement.
Before could barely get a 2 gb game to install with it constantly losing connection on my home network. Now I've tested it with multiple games, and actually have gotten them to install. But, still having connection issues. Connection issues seem intermittent. When I initially turn on the steam deck. It does not have connection for a few minutes. Then after several minutes go by. Connection is established. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes a restart fixes the issue.
I have some several hours. Trying to make this work on my router. I have spent a lot of time on this. Lol I'm just happy now. It at least stays connected long enough to the point where it will at least download some games.
There was another person in this post that solved the issue by switching to an Asus router. I'd recommend just getting rid of the netgear router.
I haven't tried to run discord or sea of thieves in a while on the SD but I was on a trip abroad for Christmas and everything on the SD seemed to work fine.
I'd also recommend updating the SD if you haven't already.
There is a well known issue with Netgear Nighthawk routers dropping connections and other problems. I had two of those routers a while back with the router dropping connections, slow internet wired and wireless. Had a friend who had the same problems.
There are many post all over the internet about the Nighthawk routers being bad. Unfortunately it’s a hardware issue that can’t be fixed. It’s best to buy a different router other than Netgear.
Good job taking care of your customers. I will not forget this next time you guys release some of your ♥♥♥♥ hardware.
I've been trying to figure out an issue with my Netgear and the Steam Deck for months and literally EVERY thread I find on ANY forum including the Netgear official ones, the only time anyone ever finds a solution is they buy a different router.
The recommended brands to switch to are Asus or D-Link.
While I am inclined to agree with you and I might make the change eventually... No other device on my network has caused this sort of issue for me. Eitherway I don't use the steamdeck at home that much so not a big deal.
