[FIXED] BUG - On Screen Keyboard Arrow Keys Only Work In the Steam Deck UI
UPDATE: FIXED AS OFF THE SEPT. 22 2022 BETA CLIENT UPDATE

A bug as simple as it sounds.
The arrow keys on the on screen keyboard only work in the Steam Deck UI... not in:
- Desktop Mode
- Non-Steam Games
- Potentially Plenty of Other Places

YES! Please make those keys just sent the actual arrow keycodes, it's really frustrating to have to close the keyboard just to move the cursor, then reopen it...

The amount of times I used these arrows to no avail is infuriating. Luckily the keyboard is easy to bring up.
This is one of the biggest annoyances of the Steam Deck for me that wasn't a problem on the Steam Controller since I could add a hotkey to move the cursor. Being able to swap the position of the huge keyboard with a hotkey would be useful too in cases where text is directly in the middle of the screen.
Steam+Y could be used to open the keyboard on top while Steam+X on the bottom as I've seen someone suggest and I like the idea.

submit that to feature requests, that sounds like a great idea

The arrow keys don't work in the Steam forums either. Typing this on my Steam Deck from game mode.

A temporary workaround to readjust the cursor position is to use the Steam button + Trackpad shortcut to move the mouse and Steam + RT to click. Or just touch the screen with your finger.
Confirmation of “Potentially Plenty of Other Places”

ARROW KEYS map to Steam Deck controller but don't work in game.

Wizardry 6, 7, 8, are Old DOS Games I'm trying to play on my steam deck. However in the Character creation I run into apart where it is required that you use the arrow keys to allocate extra points to the character traits and no other input will work.

I have mapped the arrow keys to the ABXY buttons, the D-Pad, the touch pads and the joysticks, none of them work in the game.

Does anyone have a solution or does anyone know who I contact and how to contact them to fix this issue.

You are in the completely wrong place. This thread is about the 2 arrow keys (left and right) that are on the bottom row of Steam's On-Screen Keyboard, that are used to move the cursor when typing text.

You are talking about Steam Input and mapping actual keyboard controls to your physical buttons, you should make a new thread for that if you are 100% certain that it's a bug. However I'd start with posting on Reddit, lots of people are very familiar with Steam Input and might be able to help.
I just posted a duplicate. This is clearly where the party is at :)
Same problem.

I did find a way to reproduce this in gaming mode.
here is the new beta update changelog:

should resolve the missed keystrokes and be less sluggish

maybe it also helps the directional buttons being ignored, but I didn't find an explicit mention of this issue... worth testing
I have been testing the beta for a couple days now, and the keyboard arrow keys seem to work properly!
