on screen keyboard is laggy and incredibly heavy on resources

as the title states, the on-screen keyboard feels extremely unresponsive, often failing to register inputs when using the touch screen.
Furthermore, as soon as it appears the fan kicks into high gear, CPU utilization is above 50% on all cores and GPU utilization frequently spikes to 100%. Expected remaining time on the battery is roughly halved
edit to also note that both cpu and gpu temps reach and hover in the high 70s/low 80s

I have the same problem but only in Desktop mode the OSK causes inputs to be randomly missed and the fans spin up to high speed. Are there any settings that help with this or do we need to wait for a fix?

I have not found any workaround, and the issue for me happens both in Desktop mode and portable/deck/whatyouwanttocallit UI

I also encounter ramping up fans when I open up the keyboard.

I have to correct my statement. It seems that the custom skin for the keyboard makes the fan ramp up. So I assume the skin rendering needs optimization. Changing to the default seems to be a valid work-around.

The "Night Shift" skin for example. I haven't tested others though but I had expected that other skins would behave similarly.

It's a bit better on the beta version because of the fan profile. So it doesn't get as loud but it definitely starts to get to a noisy level after waiting with the keyboard open using that skin. ^^'

ok, after short testing it seems to be an issue only with the "Night Shift" skin to me. But maybe other skins which aren't available to me have similar issues. I don't know that. Hope this helps. ^^

Can confirm it's only the Night Shift theme that is very apparent in how unoptimized it is.

It's the Night Shift one for me too (repro'd in the latest beta). Others appear to be ok. I'll use one of the alternatives for now but Night Shift is my visual favourite; hope it can be fixed?

This is still happening to me. Almost a year in and the keyboard has always been laggy. I switched from the red keyboard to one of the normal ones and I thought it worked but it still slows down very heavily when both thumbs are being used on the track pads. One at a time seems better but it's still bordering on unusable. The steam controller equivalent worked great, I just want that again.

I think I saw a recent changelog for the beta steam client addressing this two-thumbs slowness issue, or Steam Deck beta channel updates, or something like that...

Yes, please opt into the latest Beta channel and let us know if the keyboard is still laggy for you and in what situations. There are still improvements to be made, but the update on the 5th should make things better.
