Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Deck hangs when installing chrome
If I try and add chrome as a non-steam game in game mode, the deck soft hangs on "Installing Google Chrome." I can navigate around steam os, but physical buttons stop working and some UI elements wont update (battery charging for example). Trying to power off via steam menu goes to just a black screen and requires a hard reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Remove all non-steam games
2. Click 'Learn More' in non-steam game folder
3. Click "Install Chrome"

edit - did both a factory reset and completely re-imaged the deck and have the same issue

I've had issues installing Chrome too,

I tried to run "flatpak install -y com.google.Chrome" myself (which is the command Steam client runs), and it gets stuck on the question asking which flathub remote to use (default or beta), which I think is the issue.

EDIT: I confirmed it by removed the beta remote (EDIT: not a good idea!), resetting "deck_desktopapp_intro_seen" to 0 in localconfig.vdf, and restarting Steam in gaming mode.

When prompted to install Chrome, it installed successfully.

EDIT2: Except it seems to install ChromeDev because seemingly stable chrome is missing from default flathub? https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.google.Chrome

So don't remove the flathub-beta, that is not a good idea.

Oh very odd, yeah chrome stable is in flathub-beta, and chrome dev is in flathub.
Edit. Checked the web archive of flathub and it doesn't look like either chrome was on there in early march. I guess when chrome dev was added it caused this issue. @xPaw are you assuming it runs that command, or did you find that somewhere?

You are right, ChromeDev didn't exist on flathub until 5 days ago, that's why it worked before.

See https://github.com/flathub/com.google.ChromeDev/commit/f3233ec8ce5ca419dcbfd51c0f010ecbb15eb055

Now that it exists, Steam tries to run `flatpak install` command, and gets stuck on prompt to select which remote to use, and thus never actually installs it.

Looks like com.google.ChromeDev was added for stable, which is causing the prompt. When I originally installed it, before that was introduced in flathub, there was only the beta. You can install it without getting a prompt by specifying the remote like this:
flatpak install flathub-beta com.google.Chrome

I can install it via the discovery app in desktop mode as well and add it as a non-steam game. It’s just nice from game mode since it adds all the artwork and backgrounds. Also as more people get their decks they’ll be seeing that prompt

LOL that's kind of hilarious. There are a ton of beta/non-beta packages on flatpak, I'm really surprised they didn't take that into account already.

This is happening to my Deck as well. Kind of annoying. Going to go add it from Flathub I guess.

I can confirm this is still a running issue,
When you go to non steam games and use the in-built option to install chrome it, it attempts to install chrome after a couple of mins the window closes/freezes, Then all buttons and functions stop working untill the Deck is restarted

I have the exact same issues. Basically entire game mode stops working properly when you try to install Chrome. Only hard restart helps.

Hello! The latest Steam client update (1648689145 or newer) installs Chrome via flatpak correctly again.

How can we trigger the download prompt again? Mine failed a few weeks ago once and I never saw the prompt again.
