Steam Deck Overwriting Profile Cloud Saves
We are having a problem with our save files on the Steam Deck I wonder if anyone else has experienced.

Both me and my husband have our accounts set up on the Deck and we have also shared our libraries on there as well. I noticed the other day that when we load up a game that was installed from the other's account it is pulling in their saved game data, even when logged into our own profile.

EX: We installed Inscryption, from my account. When he switched to his account and loaded it up, he was in my save game file and he had never even played it before. This has happened with multiple games we have both tried to play. Additionally, he installed Inscryption on his computer, loaded it up, and there was my saved game again.

It seems to use the save file of whoever played the game first regardless of the profile or cloud save and is overwriting any other cloud data.

Any thoughts?

For anyone that happens upon this, we had a good back and forth over in this thread:

It seems this issue is much more complicated than hoped and doesn't seem to have an issue save for Valve figuring something out on their end.

Hello,

It is true that the previous user's files can be left on disk when you launch a game for the first time for that account on the device. However, the files will not be overwritten -- Steam will, from this point on, swap out each user's files to a safe local backup location when the Steam account changes.

I understand that it's confusing for you to see the other user's saves there initially; we are working on a solution for this as well.

regards,
Taylor

Having said that, I just read the linked reddit thread, and that does make it sound like the files are colliding. I'll investigate.

From my testing so far, everything is working as expected - my saves for this game are correctly getting swapped out when I change accounts on the Deck.

Hello, my wife just confirmed her Steam Deck order, so it will be shipping soon. I heard about this issue a while back, and I made a note to track its progress when we have a deck of our own. We were planning on sharing the Steam Deck until mine arrives in Q2, but I'm hesitant to potentially lose some of my saves if files are indeed still colliding. This thread seems to have no activity, but I thought I'd see if there was any confirmation that any issues have indeed been found. Is anyone still seeing their saves colliding?

Hiya,

On the weekend March 20th, my housemate added their account to my steam deck played Hades and Vampire Slayers on my steam deck. Unfortunately, steam did not swap out our saves which resulted in both of my saves being completely wiped. Which was made worse when I launched the games on my account which overwrote my cloud saves. Additionally on vampire slayers all my achievements for that game were overwritten by my housemate's and now has 100% completion (is it possible to have achievements reset?).

I did have a copy of my Hades save on my main PC but I was unsuccessful in restoring it to the steam cloud and additionally have not been able to even reset saves at all.

Thanks in advance.

So right after the above response from Valve (so a couple weeks back), we went back and tried Inscryption again -- we reset the game, reinstalled, and had one profile play enough to clearly show it as a different save -- and had absolutely no issue. It seems bizarre that the exact same method produced differing results, so we just went about day afterward. Later, we tried Witcher 3 only for my wife to load directly into my profile's save from her account, yet again.

We've yet to try any other games. As for now we're just deciding not to play the same games for the time being, as producing the issue isn't reliable enough to provide details, but happens enough to scare us away.

Thank you for that response. We’ll play it safe and follow your lead; we won’t play the same games until something is absolutely confirmed to be fixed. It’s way too risky to have saves overwritten.

Any news on this? I can't find any definitive answers anywhere regarding whether or not the problem has really been solved.
