Can you post a screenshot of what you're describing?

I have the same here.
What happens is that the game doesn't recognize the controller, and works with keyboard/mouse only (asks to press "enter" to proceed for instance).
After remaping one of the back buttons to "Enter" with Steam Input, I was able to reach the game, and in its parameters, only the keyboard/mouse options are accessible. The "Controller" one is greyed out, as if no controller was plugged in.
I will try to make a screenshot when possible.

Ok, I made a screenshot and published it on my profile, but I'm not sure how to add the picture here :-/

I've reinstalled the game and nothing. I only managed to make it work through the Windows version, with Proton 7.0-1. Only then the game would recognize the controller. But ain't the Verified experience.

Confirmed: windows version with Proton 7.0-1 solved the issue for me.
It's odd - I'm running the same game with its Linux version on my PC, and I can play with a controller...
Anyway, at least now it works.

Wait, what did you do to get it to work, now? I just got my Steam Deck a few days ago, and I just went through and bound all the keyboard controls one by one. Given that a Steam Deck doesn't have as many controls as a keyboard does buttons, I'm using almost every available button, and at that point many of them aren't intuitive. I'd like to avoid this if possible.

Force a proton version under Properties -> Compatibility.

This will make steam download the windows version of the game which can see the deck's gamepad.

Ahh, thanks. Though I'm starting to get used to my rebound controls. I might just stick with that instead. But we'll see. At least now I know it's an option.
