Wifi dropping when connecting to a access point with 5ghz and wifi 6
my wifi constantly drops when connecting to my router access point that has both 5ghz and wifi 6 support. Its basically unuseable.

We have been working on WiFi disconnections and have some improvements that we would like the larger community to test as these issues are affected by the environment that various customers are in. Please enable WiFi Power Management (as the fixes are related to this mode) and try connecting to 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks during testing. Also note that Main OS could have other issues that are currently being worked on, so please back up your data before switching to Main OS.

Instructions:
• Enable Developer Mode if you have not yet (Settings -> System -> Enable Developer Mode)
• Show Advanced Update Channels (Settings -> Developer -> Show Advanced Update Channels - toggle to On)
• Enable WiFi Power Management (Settings -> Developer -> Enable WiFi Power Management). System will reboot if you just toggled to Enable this setting.
• Switch to Main OS Update Channel (Settings -> System -> OS Update Channel - select Main). The system will apply the SW updates and reboot the system.

Please go ahead and use as normal and report back on WiFi disconnections with this OS version.

Hey thanks for instructions. I tested these settings (Main channel, WiFi Power Management On/Off, 5GHz network) but still got instant disconnects as soon as download starts. I also get disconnects when downloading through browser (though delayed compared to steam), but no disconnects when downloading over local lan or win10 hotspot.
Only thing that mitigates the issue is when I throttle download speed (limit bandwidth in download settings, setting channel width to 40hz instead of auto 20/40/80hz, switching to 2GHz, etc). The disconnects still happens but gets delayed in time.
Can you please verify the OS Build version is 20221223.1000 (seen in System -> Settings)

Yes, those are correct. Can you please provide further information that I have requested in my updated post? I'll copy them here:

There are 2 issues here that are mixed together. First is WiFi disconnections with the Steam Deck just sitting idle or usage without game downloads (e.g. browsing the store) and the second is WiFi disconnections when downloading games. Please test the two different scenarios listed above and report back on WiFi disconnections with this OS version. For the first scenario, let the Steam Deck sit idle for ~2 minutes between browsing and see if you get any disconnects. If you were having disconnections before, please try to provide an assessment if it's any better with this OS version.

If you still have disconnects, please provide the country you are in, AP make and model you are using, 2.4GHz/5GHz/Auto band, 20/40/80MHz/Auto bandwidth.
Followed the above instructions, here's what I've got:
  • OS Build / Kernel Version: 20221223.1000 / 5.13.0-valve36-1-neptune
  • Country: United States
  • AP make/model: Using 3 AmpliFi Router HD mesh routers (2 acting as mesh APs to the router over 5Ghz), Hardware ID 19, firmware version 3.7.1 (up-to-date)
  • 2.4Ghz Band: Automatic (yes); Channel: 6; Bandwidth: 20/40Hz
  • 5Ghz Band: Automatic (yes); Channel: 40; Bandwidth: 80Hz

Issue #1 - idle disconnections
I'm not seeing any issues with this when connected to 5Ghz (though I didn't have issues here pre-Dec updates, either; I have only seen something like this when testing an alternate WiFi driver, where sleep mode would break the interface, as outlined earlier in this thread).

Issue #2 - disconnects during download
This continues to occur on my 5Ghz band... shortly after starting the download, typically when the download speed hits anywhere from 9-14MB/s, the Steam Deck loses connection to the Steam servers... toggling Wifi off/on temporarily resolves it, until the download starts again and ramps up the speed, rinse, repeat.

Doing the same download on the 2.4Ghz band works without issue (however download speed on 2.4Ghz band stays around 2-3 MB/s).

Configuration/Setup Notes
So far this all matches the behavior I've seen pretty much since the Steam Deck launch.

For my network setup, I'm using a set of 3 AmpliFi Router HD mesh routers (2 acting as mesh APs to the router over 5Ghz), Hardware ID 19, firmware version 3.7.1 (up-to-date). I'm connecting through a Nighthawk CM2050V modem to Comcast cable. Main router is in my basement, two Mesh APs on opposite sides of my main floor (one of which sits about 5 feet from my Steam Deck). Both APs have good signal to the main router (the one the Steam Deck connects through is showing signal level around -50 to -55dBm).

As a workaround for daily use and for testing purposes, I have also created an additional SSID for my 2.4Ghz band on one of my main floor APs, and direct my Steam Deck to connect directly there to avoid disconnects (albeit much slower overall!).

I have MANY devices connecting to both APs and to the router directly with no issues on the 5Ghz band.

Router Wireless Settings:
  • Security: WPA2
  • Primary / Secondary DNS: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4
  • Hardware NAT (yes)
  • UPNP (yes)
  • Clone MAC Address (no)
  • VLAN ID (no)
  • IPv6 (no)
  • Bridge mode (no)
  • Band Steering (yes)
  • Router Steering (no)
  • 2.4Ghz Band: Automatic (yes); Channel: 6; Bandwidth: 20/40Hz
  • 5Ghz Band: Automatic (yes); Channel: 40; Bandwidth: 80Hz

Here are my test results, using above template for formatting:
  • OS Build / Kernel Version: 20221223.1000 / 5.13.0-valve36-1-neptune
  • Country: Poland
  • AP make/model: Huawei HG8245Q2 (provided by isp), Hardware Version B99.A, Software Version V3R019C10S360
  • 2.4Ghz Band: Channel automatic; Channel Width: Auto 20/40Hz; Mode: 802.11/b/g/n
  • 5Ghz Band: Channel automatic; Channel Width: Auto 20/40/80Hz (which defaults to 80Hz); Mode: 802.11/a/n/ac
  • Wifi power management on

Issue #1 - idle disconnections
Throughout the months I haven't seen issue when idling, but I also had disabled wifi power management. The only issue I had seen was with restoring wifi after putting deck to sleep, but this seems resolved by now.
I started testing with power management on and tests results were inconsistent.
The first time when I let deck sit idle it got disconnected from wifi (wifi icon went grey) and I had to reconnect through settings. After that I could not reproduce same issue.
Later I did some more tests and although no disconnects happened when idling, I got "Cannot reach steam servers" error when actively browsing (with wifi still connected and exclamation mark on wifi icon). Did more tests and also couldn't reproduce this issue. I suppose this is related to second issue.

Issue #2 - disconnects during download
This issue continues since I got my deck. I got stuck in boot loop on initial startup because I connected to 5Ghz and deck was constantly losing connection. Using 2.4Ghz helped around that. Tested 2 decks on my network and both have issue with it.
Generally as soon as I start download I get exclamation mark near wifi icon and cannot reach steam server error in settings. Usually turning wifi on/off fixes it, but sometimes I need to restart device. Connection issues happens when downloading games, deck updates, but also when downloading through browser. I also got disconnects when using moonlight/remote play or when booting during shader cache updates. I did not get disconnects when downloading large files over lan (though this contradicts moonlight/remote play case so further tests might be needed here...)

List of things I tried to resolve the issue (probably incomplete):
  • IPv6 on/off/ignored: doesn't help
  • Wifi power management on/off: doesn't help
  • Setting fixed channel width 40hz: disconnects happens, but gets delayed
  • Download speed limit 140000kbps: disconnects delayed, but usually was able to use device without problems
  • Wifi 2.4GHz: disconnects doesn't happen when downloading (slow), though one time connection dropped when I was remote playing
  • Setting driver options (found on other forums): doesn't help
  • Using alternate driver: this seemed to fix the issue, but after deck update when I tried to install it, my deck got bricked and I had to reimage it, so I stopped using it.
  • Tweaking various settings in router, dtim/beacon period, mode, channel, upnp, port forwarding etc.: doesn't help, settings related to download speed delay the issue
  • Setting up hotspot on my desktop: no disconnects, reaching speeds 50MB/s
  • Using different devices, arch linux steam downloads: no disconnects, win10 steam downloads: no disconnects
It mostly happens on non-throttled 5GHz network when download speeds reach 20MB/s (though this is not a rule). Up till now I mostly got around this issue by limiting download speed to 140000Kb/s, but on this new build even this stopped helping, so something must have changed. Upon further testing I found one interesting correlation. On 80Hz I get instant disconnects, but on 40Hz my connection is more stable and I am able to download few gigabytes (avg 18MB/s), before eventually losing connection also. But when I move closer to ap (I am testing in another room), the download speed starts ramping up (up to 30MB/s), and disconnects happen faster.

i think I just got lucky and mine been solid
I getting frustrated, i got my SD yesterday, i managed to connect to our wifi and download my game, but now im at work and tried to connect to our wifi that was no password, and i cant connect, i have read and followed the above instructions but none of them solves my problem, i tried to connect to my phone as being hotspot and my SD connected in no time. Maybe someone can still help me with my concerns, my feelings of being Hype over this machine is slowly turning into frustrations.
1) "our wifi that has no password"... that's almost never safe, avoid using unsecured wifi hotspots as much as possible... the lack of passwords means no transmission encryption, which is worse than having a password and putting it on posters on the walls

2) working fine on WiFi X and not on WiFi Y is an unfortunately classic behaviour for the SD:

3) can you report your situation following @resibik's instructions?

I noticed my wifi speeds being extremely slow lately on my steam deck. Both 2.4ghz band and 5ghz band.

Edit. Turns out it is just guild wars 2 being horribly slow for updating.

Hey resibik, any updates to offer? Or any other troubleshooting affected users can do to speed along a resolution to this?
Adding to the pile. I'll put my Steam Deck to sleep and most times when I wake it back up the WiFi is disconnected. I have to go into the Wi-Fi settings and either it reconnects on it's own from there or I have to click on my Wi-Fi network to reconnect manually.

I have already split my network into a separate SS for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Same issue for both.
Same here, but it's extremely random and completely dependent on OS version.

Initially on stable I had segfaults in kernel on iwd (the kernel module that manage wireless connections on LInux on which the specific realtek driver attaches) expecially when downloading large games/using significant bandwitth. Other times it would start at AC speeds (2.5 gbit user, around 30/40 MB/s), and after 10 seconds get cut to max 10 MB/s (2.4 Ghz channel speeds). Switching off power management had no influence.

After that I swiched to preview and the segfaults were gone, but I had this issue for a while in semptember, where there were no crash on iwd but steam would randomly stop connecting to the content server, even if the connection was still fine and I could browse community and such from the UI. The only fix was to toggle off and on the wifi, but that would fix the issue only if I would not download anything from Steam, otherwire that would come back after 10/30 seconds. it was extremely annoying and rendered the device basically useless. Then the issue disappeared ageain.

Again around end of december the problem popped up randomly, but just for a couple of days. I have serously no idea what the problem of the deck is, expecially since my laptop on Linux had the same network adapter, RTL8822CE, and on the same network never had issues to speak of. It wasn't amazingly fast (that is why I have switched to a AX210 module from Intel), but it was working fine. Mind you that I have used with Linux 5.17 to 5.19, which is more recent than the Deck 5.13, so maybe this will also be an issue of the past when Valve will switch to Linux 6.

Just my two cents,

Marco

Why is valve not using the latest os?

Why is valve not using the latest os?

Main issue is probably custom drivers not yet upstreamed to the latest kernel. There is already a build for 6.0 in the repos from the last two months, but it's still not the default. People have already tried to switch to that without much issue. Probably it's not far long down the line before it will be swapped out.

guess its the waiting time! I have been lucky and wifi connects on my end 95% of the time. Speeds are horrible but at least it connects.
