(also, tv bloatware and ui can be different)
---
1. my daily driver samsung tv now registers the deck as a connected PC by default, not as a console.
(different entry in smart hub with less automation)
When I first got the deck I managed to get it to show up on the console/hdmi component side of the smarthub with a 'steamdeck' tile but it caused my tv to go into the whole 'gaming mode' and also started messing with things it shouldn't mess with. The battle between my dock, my deck and my TV to control resolution/wake/peripherals was just too much.
Turned all that off and set the deck up as a pc.
I mention this because the automated smart functions can be quite dumb.
---
2. Something that always helps me when switching around displays is that I do it either:
a. in desktop mode; using a dual monitor setup, I set the secondary screen to hidden so that it defaults to steam deck screen as 1 but leaves the screen 2 option accessible. Now when u switch ports/screens you get the double benefit of seeing if there is an immediate reaction on the decks' side as well as avoiding wasted time in the 'revert settings' window so u can go straight to troubleshooting.
b. with the steam deck powered off, I let it POST with the 2nd screen plugged in.
---
3. I have used my steam deck on 2 different samsung tvs, one low-end and one that is higher-end and both USUALLY work as intended, but both have 'forgotten' the deck when registering it as a console/hdmi component.
---
4. (a general bit of advice) pay attention to ports and cables, a 4k/30hz cable might run fine directly from a component to the tv but encounter issues when plugged into a dock, or a 4k cable plugged into a 4k/30hz port might refuse to show up at all rather than just be choppy af. Watch out for up/down scaling services, more so if they stack. There is going to be a bottleneck somewhere, if you dig for it.
---
1080p is my hard-locked default for external monitors. ymmv but I find that 720p usually triggers 'features' in modern tvs and 800p does not always compute.
---
fwiw, I always eventually switch back to monitors anyways
I can't seem to find it anywhere in the deck.
Its for sure not the cable and the ports of the TV as I've tried it's with all of them and my switch and ps5 work perfectly.
I will try to rollback one update and see if it works then...
I bought a deck especially for TV....
The refresh rate will be in the performance menu (press the "..." button, then navigate to the performance section)
Also, as bean noted make sure to check your TVs manual to ensure what refresh rate and resolution is supported on each of the HDMI inputs and ensure your cable and input are capable to handle the signal your sending.
My deck is not connecting via hdmi even in Desktop mode, on all hdmi ports with all available cables in every configuration...
Steam Deck to Dock to TV?
Deck to Dongle to TV?
Deck to USB hub to TV?
what are you using?
(as specific as possible please)
Also, have you ever managed to get it working on that tv? you mentioned it might be the update so I am curious to know if it worked before.
I just got that dock 3 days ago (https://www.bol.com/nl/p/steam-deck-dock-docking-station-5-in-1-geschikt-voor-mobiel-ipad-tablet-asus-rog-ally-4k-hdmi-ethernet-2-x-usb-usb-c/9300000158755900?referrer=socialshare_pdp_androidapp)
I didn't get it to work, I tried only after the major steam update. Don't know if it worked before.
It does work with the exact same cable plug and play on my LG ultragear 32" pc monitor.
I've tried setting the hdmi port on my TV to console and to pc.
When I connect the dock with hdmi to the TV, the steam deck does register a second screen, but the TV says no signal...
What ever I try configure or set up, nothing seems to work.
I must say, I'm very good with windows systems (windows system admin as a profession), but suck at Linux...
I tried connecting my tablet and phone Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra via the dock to my TV and get the same issue. (Also with my galaxy Tab 6)
When I connect my laptop via de dock to my TV it also doesn't work, the laptop recognizes the TV but the TV gives not signal.
When I connect the laptop through he same hdmi cable but without the dock it works instantly.
The dock does work perfectly on my Ultragear monitor, just not with my TV.
That leads me to the conclusion that the dock is incompatible with my TV.
If you connect a USB c to hdmi cable between the 2 devices it works like a charm.
Only downside is that you cannot charge your deck while it's connected via hdmi....
I‘ve run into the same issue. Slightly different Samsung model though.
Did you have any luck resolving the issue?
The only option is connect the deck to the TV using a usb-c -> hdmi-cable.
Then use the deck itself as a controller and for a possible second player connect a Bluetooth controller to your deck.
Any other option failed for me.

TV firmware is thick and I would not be surprised if its unreliable too.
